Citric acid is a white odorless, crystalline solid. Citric acid is primarily used as a food additive, usually for citrus flavor or as a preservative. Citric acid is commonly known as a flavoring agent. Therefore, it is used to contribute a tart flavor in commercial, ready-to-drink beverages and drink mixes. It is also found in gelatin mix, ice cream, jams, sweets, carbonated beverages, and much more food and beverage products. Citric acid is also used in insecticides and disinfectants to help destroy bacteria and viruses. Citric acid can also be used in many formulations to balance PH levels, making products safe to use.
