Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is still surrounded by many myths and misconceptions, especially when it comes to children who are developing speech and language.

❌ “AAC will stop my child from talking.”
❌ “A child needs to understand symbols before receiving an AAC system.”
❌ “AAC is only for children who are completely non-speaking.”
❌ “We should only put a few words on the device so the child isn’t overwhelmed.”
❌ “The AAC device should stay at school or in the therapy room.”

But the research and current AAC practices tell us a very different story.

AAC is about giving a person an effective way to communicate, to request, comment, protest, ask questions, describe, joke, greet others, share information, and so much more!

And AAC isn’t just for children. People of all ages may benefit from AAC, whether temporarily or long-term, depending on their communication needs.

Les dispositifs de communication améliorée et alternative (CAA) font encore l’objet de nombreux mythes et idées reçues.

❌ « La CAA va empêcher mon enfant de parler. »
❌ « Il faut comprendre les symboles avant d’avoir accès à un système de CAA. »
❌ « La CAA est seulement pour les enfants qui ne parlent pas. »
❌ « Il vaut mieux mettre seulement quelques mots pour ne pas surcharger l’enfant. »
❌ « L’appareil devrait rester à l’école ou en thérapie. »

Et pourtant… la recherche et les pratiques actuelles en CAA nous montrent une tout autre réalité.

La CAA vise avant tout à offrir à une personne un moyen efficace de communiquer : demander, commenter, protester, poser des questions, partager une idée, raconter, plaisanter, créer des liens… et bien plus encore !

Et surtout, la CAA n’est pas réservée aux enfants. Elle peut soutenir des personnes de tous âges et être utilisée de façon temporaire ou à long terme, selon les besoins de communication.
