✌🏼 Annnnd that’s a wrap!⁣
The end of an era. ⁣

I am so grateful to for welcoming me when I first moved to Nanaimo just over 8 years ago and osteopathy was barely known to anyone in this city.⁣

Over the years, working first at Dufferin then moving to the gorgeous 🌳 Rutherford corner office, I am so grateful to have made many meaningful professional connections, grown my practice, and found a niche in pediatric osteopathy with a focus on lactation support, while also supporting folks of all ages and seeing a wide range of symptoms and conditions. ⁣

💗 8 years, 1,500+ patients, a lot of laughter, learning and many friendships. ⁣

I will especially miss .centred.space who is so much more than a receptionist, I am forever grateful for all that you’ve done for me. ⁣

And for being the heart of this place, and all of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps the clinic running smoothly. ⁣

Onto the next chapter! 🌊 ⁣

👋🏼 Welcome, new friends! I’ve noticed a lot of new faces and wanted to thank you for being here! 🫶🏼⁣

For those of you new to my page, hi, I’m Anne-Marie ☺️. I’m an osteopathic practitioner located in Nanaimo and love treating people of all ages, especially babies and women with chronic pain (whose care often falls through the gaps), and enjoy the variety that my work brings every day (from neck pain to post-surgical scars, spains, strains, tension, etc.) There is never a dull day for me at the clinic, I am constantly learning and I wouldn’t have it any other way! 🤓 ⁣

I am a mom of two beautiful and wild boys (if you’re a boy mom IKYK) 🤪 and we love to spend time outside, looking for critters on the beach and taking our pup on hikes. ⁣

Originally from Saskatchewan, our little family moved out west almost 10 years ago to enjoy everything Vancouver Island has to offer. ⁣

My intention is to become more active on this account to share information about osteopathy, lactation support, and common topics that come up in my practice that you can benefit from too! ⁣

I’d love to get to know you too! What are you most interested in learning about, what questions do you have about osteopathy or chest/breastfeeding, where are you following from, or share a fun fact about yourself! 💕⁣

“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭” can be tricky to answer sometimes, we simply don’t always have the words to describe our symptoms, sensations, or feelings.⁣

Children especially may not always be able to articulate what’s going on in their bodies so I sometimes ask them to draw themselves ✍️. ⁣

Here are two self-portraits, drawn before and after an osteopathy treatment session by a child patient of mine. ⁣

He had access to all the coloured crayons and I simply asked him to draw himself before treating him, then again at the end of our session 🌈 ⁣

Did you know that osteopathy is covered by most extended health insurance companies? ⁣

Plans vary in what they include in the extended health package so make sure to check your plan. ⁣

We can direct bill via Telus health at our clinic if your provider is set up to do so, otherwise you can submit your receipt for reimbursement 💵⁣

📧 If osteopathy isn’t listed on your plan, email me at 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗲-𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲@𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺 and I will send you a letter that you can submit to your employer or union representative to request that osteopathy be included in your benefits plan the next time they negotiate what they will cover. ⁣

Our provincial association in British Columbia is OsteopathyBC. You will find a list of qualified osteopathic practitioners on their website and more information about osteopathy. ⁣

Is your baby turning their head more to one side than the other? ⁣🤔

Sometimes babies demonstrate a preference for turning their head to one side more than the other. When muscles in the neck are really tight, baby may not be able to look towards the other direction at all. If this is happening, your baby might have torticollis. ⁣

Torticollis is a common muscular condition caused by tightening of the muscles on the side of the neck, often resulting from baby’s position in the womb.⁣

When identified early, torticollis can easily be treated and resolved. ⁣

If you are concerned about your baby’s head position or neck mobility, it’s a good idea to reach out for support.⁣

A pediatric osteopathic practitioner can help to identify restrictions in muscles and joints, measure range of motion, and assess the rest of baby’s body to identify patterns of tension and restricted mobility. 🤲🏼💕 We use gentle hands-on techniques to improve mobility and reduce tension comfortably for baby and will provide you with strategies you can do to further help your baby.

Did you know that Osteopathy can alleviate symptoms associated with infant colic, such as crying, regurgitation and interrupted sleep? ⁣

Colic is defined as “when a healthy baby cries for a very long time for no obvious reason” 😳⁣

Let me tell you- while everything may check out as ‘healthy and fine’ medically, a baby who is crying inconsolably is most definitely trying to communicate something. ⁣

Characteristics of infant colic include inconsolable crying for more than 3 hours, more than 3 days per week, for longer than 3 weeks and affects about 10-40% of infants and peaks around 6 weeks of age. ⁣

📚A randomized controlled study published in 2023 found that treatment with osteopathic manual therapy alleviated the symptoms of infant colic and showed reductions in colic severity, compared to the control group. ⁣

👶🏼The group of infants who received osteopathic treatment cried less and the improvement was maintained during the second week, with parents reporting improvements after each treatment. They also had improvements in sleep and regurgitation with no adverse side effects 🙌🏼 ⁣

💥Neck Pain, whether an acute flare-up or a chronic occurrence, is a common problem that can really impact quality of life and is often distressing to some degree. ⁣

Sometimes the cause is fairly obvious, as in when there has been an injury (whiplash, falls, sports injuries), yet it is also common for neck pain to occur without a mechanism of injury with seemingly random onset. ⁣

Stress, head position or posture (as in prolonged computer work), and general body tension can contribute to neck discomfort and pain. ⁣

The pain may be localized to the neck, or may radiate into the head, down the arms, and into the upper back or shoulders. ⁣

Osteopathic Practitioners aim to understand whether neck pain is originating from muscle tension or strain, irritation to nerves, breathing patterns, or is due to conditions of the bones and discs of the cervical spine. ⁣

We use a range of techniques that can focus on the cranium, spine, muscles, throat, jaw, and shoulders, while applying a global approach and understanding the importance of looking at the whole body rather than only treating the symptomatic area (there are so many interconnections within the body!). ⁣

Techniques used may include:⁣
- cranial osteopathic techniques⁣
- soft tissue techniques⁣
- joint mobilization’s (which are always gentle and working with the body, no forceful manoeuvres are ever used on the neck)⁣

We may talk about movements, exercises, and strategies to ease your symptoms in conjunction to osteopathic treatment. ⁣

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! ⁣
