What an incredible and emotional two days.

This was our second year providing hearing care at the Elders Gathering at Canada Place, and our Hear at Home team is leaving exhausted, but incredibly grateful that we were able to be there.

We met so many wonderful people from different Nations and communities. We tested hearing, answered questions, and most importantly, we listened.

Some of the stories shared with us during case histories were heartbreaking.

One woman told me her mother made sure her children never learned their traditional language because she believed speaking only English would help protect them. She remembers her grandfather, an Elder, telling stories in their language, but she couldn’t understand him.

Another gentleman shared that he’d had three ear surgeries. His first was related to injuries he suffered at residential school, including being pulled violently by his ears by nuns. We heard other stories of physical abuse and head trauma that may have contributed to hearing problems later in life.

It’s difficult to hear these stories and not be affected by them.

We barely stopped over the two days because there were so many people we wanted to help. By the end, we were tired, but very aware of what a privilege it was to be trusted not only with someone’s hearing care, but sometimes with a small part of their story.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to see us, shared a story, had their hearing tested, or simply came over to say hello.

Hear at Home was truly honoured to be part of the Elders Gathering for our second year.

We came to help people hear.

But we also came away having listened.

A hearing aid is a product. Hearing care is a service.

Professional hearing care can include testing, personalized programming, adjustments, communication counselling and ongoing support as your hearing needs change.

For some people, an OTC hearing aid may be enough. For others, the care surrounding the hearing aid can make the biggest difference.

The best solution isn’t necessarily the newest or most expensive. It’s the one that’s right for you. 🧡

Should you try an over-the-counter hearing aid, or choose professionally fitted hearing aids?

The answer isn’t the same for everyone.

OTC hearing aids can be more affordable and easier to access, but you’re generally responsible for choosing the device, setting it up, adjusting it, maintaining it, and deciding whether it’s actually helping.

Before making a decision, there are four important questions to consider:

Is your hearing loss appropriate for an OTC hearing aid?

Can you manage the hearing aid independently?

How much professional support do you want?

What will you do if the hearing aid doesn’t help?

Thinking about trying an over-the-counter hearing aid?

There are some situations where it’s important to have your hearing checked first, including sudden hearing loss, hearing loss mainly in one ear, ongoing ear pain, dizziness, or significant ringing in one ear.

Sometimes hearing difficulties are caused by something as simple as earwax. Other times, they may need further investigation.

If you’re unsure, a professional hearing assessment is a good place to start. 🧡

Over-the-counter hearing aids are now available in BC. Is that a good thing? I think for the right person, it can be.

OTC hearing aids may offer a more affordable and accessible option for adults with mild to moderate hearing difficulties. But they’re not right for everyone, and there are times when a hearing assessment should come first.
