One of my favourite things from my childhood is when my mom would wash my hair in the kitchen sink. The feel of the suds bubbling, her hands massaging my scalp, the feel of the warm water rinsing my hair and the feel of her holding me in this space with safety and with care.
When my daughter Emma decided to become a head spa practitioner I never imagined this is the memory I would come back to as she treated me for the first time. All of the beautiful sensations I learned as a child of what safe touch felt like came flooding back to my nervous system. I have always been a hyper independent woman. I give myself the things I need, I am a caregiver, practitioner, business owner, mother, daughter, partner. I am always giving. To receive has often been a challenge because I had experiences in my childhood that didn’t allow touch to feel safe. My nervous system was wired in connection to that trauma.
After years of therapy, working with energy specialists, shamans, guided spiritual healers I was finally able to rewire my nervous system to allow safe touch to happen without the pit of fight or flight taking over.
Bringing the head spa into Soul Journeys Restorative Healing was intentional. I would love for our clients to experience safe touch, touch where you feel cared for, where you can allow your body to relax and be treated with tenderness. Sure we can give these things to ourselves, but there is nothing like being held in a space where your nervous system is met with compassion, trust and relaxation.
What an experience for me, 48 years after this childhood picture to experience this safety again at the hands of my daughter all the while remembering my Mom granting me the blessing of safety.
If you would like to experience a space that holds you just as you are, in a trauma informed centre, I encourage you to book a session with any one of our practitioners. Treat you and your nervous system to experiences that facilitate the anchoring of safety, trust and nourishment.
