“Unfortunately, tanning has made a major comeback among younger generations.

As a dermatologist, it breaks my heart. I care for patients whose lives have been permanently altered by skin cancer, and it’s difficult to watch trends promote the very behaviors that increase that risk.

The rise of “UV maxxing,” intentional tanning, and misinformation about sunscreen online is deeply concerning. A tan is not a sign of health—it’s your skin’s response to DNA damage.

No tan is worth the risk of skin cancer. And even if cancer isn’t what motivates you, chronic UV exposure is the single biggest cause of premature skin aging, including wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of skin elasticity.

Sunscreens have been used safely by millions of people for decades and have an excellent safety profile. The sun, on the other hand, is a known human carcinogen. Between sunscreen and unprotected UV exposure, the evidence is clear.
