Sharing some wisdom from a recent therapy session I had:

✨ Check-in with yourself about your capacity often during the day (I’m starting with before I transition into a new task)

✨ Ask yourself, out of 10 (10=best) where is my capacity sitting at Emotionally? Spiritually? Physically? Mentally

✨ Take that information as just that - information

This helps you to build trust with yourself, helps you to communicate with others about where you’re at, but most importantly, it’s helping me to be kinder to myself 💓

It’s one thing to fix low iron levels, but that’s usually just a temporary band-aide solution 🩹

What you really need to figure out is WHY was it low in the first place?! 🤨

Here are some possible reasons why your iron may be low:

🩸Heavy periods
🩸Digestive bleeds (ulcers, colon cancer, etc)
🩸Certain medications can minimize/block absorption
🩸Vegetarian/Vegan diets
🩸Digestive diseases (Celiac, ulcerative colitis, Chron’s disease, etc)
🩸Surgery (blood loss from it or bariatric procedures)
🩸Pregnancy & breastfeeding
🩸Growth spurts

This is where having a naturopathic doctor on your team can be useful to help you figure out the root cause and correct it 💓

Oral iron vs Intravenous iron:

🩸If you’re iron deficient, both options are valid

🩸Many people get enough digestive upset from various forms of oral iron that they don’t take it, or are inconsistent with using it

🩸Others loose blood too quickly / too much (hello my heavy period people out there!) & oral iron can’t keep up

Fixing low iron is one thing, but understanding WHY your iron levels are low is the key 🔑

Treating patients for more than 15 years, I can tell you that low iron levels show up as a cluster of symptoms that are the root cause OR slow us down from treating the root cause 🩸

If you’re ferritin is under 70 and your experiencing:

🩸 heavy periods

🩸 poor wound healing

After 15 years of practice, I can easily say that iron levels are one of the top problems patients deal with (and easiest to fix!), despite being told by their MDs that “it’s fine.” 😑

Below are common signs of low iron levels:

🩸 Heavy periods
🩸 Frequent low grade headaches
🩸 Hair thinning or shedding
🩸 Fatigue
🩸 Shortness of breath or poor exercise tolerance
🩸 Fluttering in your chest
🩸 Feeling cold in hands & feet

Get your levels checked by doing blood work & talk with a naturopathic doctor about your results and your options. You don’t have to walk around being told your “fine” when you feel like crap 💩

🕯️ I learned that when I can embrace the parts of me that feel anxious and hopeless, I’m able make friends with the shadow parts of myself VS thinking I’m broken & need to be fixed

🕯️I’m leaving behind the belief that doing things needs to be hard. It can be easy and I have proved that to myself over these 12 months

🕯️ I’m bringing forward for these 12 months the seed of self compassion that has sprouted, and nurturing that baby in a gentle and consistent way
