HOW AI is used is whats important - i use it a lot ot pad out bullet points, to convert WORD to powerpoint, to brain storm ideas - but to many people use it WRITE the compelte thing they are doing with no logic, no processing and these days it seems without even reading it to make sure it makes sense! the number of AI writte n**s i see lately which make no sense, and star signs nad other such magical stuff wrintten by AI thats absolute drivel but accepted as fact is scary! even people i work with are doing it even though they have the knowdlege to write better without it - but have got lazy and dont fact check :(
A recent MIT Media Lab study tracked 54 people using EEG headsets while they completed writing tasks with ChatGPT, search engines, or no digital assistance. The ChatGPT group showed lower levels of brain engagement and had more difficulty remembering what they had written.
Researchers linked this to cognitive offloading, where some of the planning, reasoning, and idea generation gets handed over to the AI. The study doesn't show that ChatGPT "damages the brain" per se, but it does raise an important question about what happens when we regularly outsource the very thinking skills we're supposed to be developing.
Again, the concern isn't whether AI is good or bad. It's whether we're using technology to augment human intelligence or replace the development of it. If convenience consistently removes the need to think, struggle, remember, and create for ourselves, we may become more efficient while simultaneously becoming less capable.
As always, tech needs to be bound by wisdom. Humanity seems to be developing tech much faster than wisdom collectively.
