Most parents comparing 4D packages look at the prints, the bears, the frames. Those are lovely. They're also not the thing that shapes the appointment.

What actually changes the experience is the clinical depth sitting behind the images.

Every one of our 4D packages includes a growth check. Not a glance at the screen, a proper look. Baby's measurements, fluid, placenta position, how everything is sitting on the day you come in. The images you take home are one part of the appointment. The conversation is the other.

The longer packages simply give our midwife sonographers more time. More time to wait for baby to turn. More time to talk you through what you're seeing. More time to answer the questions you didn't know you had until you were lying on the couch.

Two little words, whispered in a scan room or shouted in a delivery suite. When do you want to hear them?

Some parents know from the moment they see the positive test that they'll be finding out early. The name lists, the nursery walls, the tiny cardigans folded and waiting. Knowing makes the months ahead feel a little closer, a little more real.

Others hold out for that one unrepeatable moment. The room, the midwife, the "it's a..." spoken aloud for the very first time. Nothing planned around it. Just the surprise itself.

Neither camp is more sentimental than the other. They're just two different ways of holding onto the same milestone.

If you'd like to know, our gender scans are carried out from 14 weeks by experienced midwife sonographers. Kind, patient, never rushed. One of our recent parents, Kirsty, came in at 15 weeks with a baby who was tucked away and being a little stubborn. A brisk ten-minute walk later, baby was moving, gender confirmed, and everyone left smiling.

Some families book three separate scans and end up spending more than they needed to. Others buy a package and only use half of it.

Neither is a mistake. They just needed different things.

If you've only got one specific question, whether that's checking a heartbeat at 9 weeks, finding out the gender at 16, or seeing your baby's face in 4D at 28, an individual scan does exactly that job. Our standalone scans start from £60, and you're welcome to come once and never again.

If you'd rather have a midwife sonographer walking beside you through the whole pregnancy, a package makes more sense. Reassurance early on, gender in the middle, growth and wellbeing later. Our packages run from £120 to £282.50, depending on how much of the journey you'd like covered.

The honest answer we give families every week is this: it depends on where you are in your pregnancy and what you're actually hoping to get from it. Someone at 30 weeks who just wants one look doesn't need a package. Someone at 8 weeks who knows they'll worry between every NHS appointment probably does.

"Cephalic presentation."

You read it on your scan report. You nod. You move on. And somewhere between the car park and the kettle at home, you wonder what it actually meant.

Presentation is one of those words that turns up on nearly every scan report and rarely gets explained in plain English. So here it is, without the medical shorthand.

Presentation simply means which part of your baby is closest to the birth canal at the moment we're scanning. Head down is cephalic. Bottom or feet down is breech. Lying sideways is transverse. That's it.

It's a snapshot, not a verdict. Babies move, turn, and settle right through the third trimester, and one scan is a picture of that particular afternoon, not a prediction of your birth.

At Clayton Clinic, every scan tier includes a full growth and presentation assessment, talked through with a midwife sonographer who has delivered babies as well as scanned them. If your report says something you don't recognise, you're allowed to ask what it means, out loud, in the room, before you leave.

A good private clinic should know exactly who to call if something needs a second look.

Most of the time, a scan at Clayton Clinic ends the way you hope. A steady heartbeat. Measurements where they should be. A midwife sonographer talking you through what's on screen.

Two scans. That's what most people picture when they picture a pregnancy.

The 12-week dating scan. The 20-week anomaly scan. Two windows, months apart, designed to answer population-level questions across the whole of the NHS. It's brilliant screening. It was never meant to be reassurance.

For families who've held a loss, or sat through a pregnancy where the worry never quite lifted, two scans in nine months is a very long stretch of quiet. Which is why some of the parents we see come to us at 6 weeks, and then again, and then again. Five, six, sometimes more visits before their baby is born.

That isn't over-scanning. That's continuity.

It's the same team, remembering your story from the last appointment. The same midwife sonographer who knows this is your second pregnancy after a difficult first. The same voice on the phone when you ring, unsure whether what you're feeling is normal.

A private scan clinic isn't only for people who are already pregnant.

That assumption keeps a lot of women sitting with questions they've carried for months. After a miscarriage. After a year of trying. After a cycle that doesn't feel quite right, but doesn't quite warrant another GP call either.

Katy came to us after two miscarriages. Not pregnant. Not sure she'd feel welcome in a clinic she associated with bumps and baby photos. She booked a pelvic wellbeing scan and a fertility blood panel because she needed to understand why her body wasn't recovering.

She told us afterwards that it didn't feel overwhelming, even as someone walking in for a non-pregnancy reason. Her bloods came back quickly, in a format she could actually read, with a plain-language summary she could hand to her GP.

You booked it for the photos. You'll leave knowing your baby's position, where the placenta is sitting, and how she's growing.

A 4D scan here isn't a photo session with a clinical bit tacked on. It's a full growth and presentation check, and the images are what happens along the way.

The person holding the probe spent years in an NHS delivery suite before she ever sat down in our scan room. She's delivered babies, held babies, and sat with parents through the quiet moments in between.

Parents often leave with something their midwife hadn't covered yet. Not because anyone missed it, just because the timing lined up here first.
