Policies matter. But they should never override the law - or a child’s individual needs!

We’re seeing more and more situations where policy is being used as the final word, especially during this period of uncertainty around SEND reforms.

But the law hasn’t changed.
Children’s rights haven’t changed.

And when we rely solely on policy without questioning it, we risk missing what’s right in front of us.

This isn’t about pointing fingers.
It’s about encouraging reflection - because that’s where better practice starts.

Sometimes people hear the phrase “school avoidance” and imagine children simply refusing school for no reason.

But when we asked families why their children were struggling to attend… this is what they told us.

Anxiety.
Sensory overwhelm.
Bullying.
Feeling unsafe.
Not enough support.
Loneliness.
Exhaustion.
Pressure.
Being misunderstood.

When you really look at those words together, it stops being about attendance figures and starts becoming a much bigger conversation about whether children actually feel safe, included and able to cope in the environments they’re being expected to learn in.

That “back to school after half term” feeling is starting to kick in already 😅

🥰 Some kids are excited to see their friends again.
😢Some are already feeling anxious.

Then there’s us parents… mentally preparing for the battles over sleep routines, uniforms, transitions, and trying to hold everything together for one last push before summer ☀️

That last six or seven week term can feel like a LONG time when school is hard.
