When I talk about my care work, people often ask,

“So… do you do a lot of personal care?”

And the honest answer is - not really.

Of course, I will happily do whatever is required. As needs change, we step in and support with whatever is needed. (To bust a myth about private care straight away...you are allowed to do personal care, you do not need to be CQC registered as long as it's YOU doing the task)

But a lot of what we actually do is something far simpler.

We are there.

So many older people don’t stop showering because they don’t care.

They stop because they’re afraid.

Afraid of slipping.
Afraid of falling.
Afraid of breaking a hip.
Afraid of not being able to get up if they fall.

So the easiest thing to do?

Is to stop.

Stop showering.
Stop going out.
Stop reaching into cupboards.
Stop making a brew.
Stop walking to the fridge.

And slowly, you see the changes.

Clothes not quite as fresh.
Hair not as tidy.
Weight starting to drop because meals are getting smaller.
Urine infections creeping in because they’re not drinking enough.

Not because they can’t.

But because they’re scared. They might not even realise they are scared, but it is the fear of falling that has led to their behaviour change, fear has got them!

And so much of what we do is simply this:

Be there when they shower.
Stand nearby.
Carry the brew.
Reach the cupboard.
Walk beside them.
Be present.

Not to take over.
Not to do everything.
But to give them the confidence of knowing that if something wobbles… someone steady is there.

That’s support.

It’s not dramatic.
It’s not headline-grabbing.
It’s not always “hands-on personal care.”

It’s presence.

And presence is powerful.

Because sometimes the difference between decline and independence… is just knowing someone’s there. 💛
