A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Sewing Community Together event at Leeds Markets during Volunteers' Week.

It was wonderful to see so many people getting involved, from having a go on our vintage Singer sewing machine to sharing stories, learning new skills and enjoying meaningful conversations with others.

We're also delighted that so many people signed up to volunteer on the day. Thank you for your interest in supporting St Gemma's and helping us continue to provide care for local people and their families.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the event such a special day 🪡💜

A huge well done to Louisa for completing the Chesterfield 10k and raising over £400 in loving memory of her mum and dad, Paul & Amanda Binns 👟

Louisa shared:
“It was by far the hardest thing I’ve done, but you guys are worth every step. I came over the finish line with my niece in tow… You never know who’s watching you, so you can’t give up.”

Thank you from all of us at St Gemma's Hospice for your incredible support, and to your brilliant niece for being that final burst of inspiration that carried you across the finish line 💜

On one of the hottest May days on record, 17-year-old Isla and her dad, Lee, took on an incredible challenge of cycling 45 miles from their home in Doncaster to the Hospice in Moortown, Leeds 🚲

Riding through the intense heat, Isla raised an amazing £2,683.50 (including Gift Aid) in loving memory of her auntie, Sophie Knight 💜

Isla’s mum, Emma, said:
“Isla and her dad Lee did an amazing job! I could not be any prouder of them for completing the challenge in the searing heat… It was a very emotional and bittersweet day.”

A huge thank you for your wonderful support of the Hospice. Your dedication is so inspiring 👏

Lisa recently took on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, surrounded by her family and friends in loving memory of her brother Richard Haley 🏔️

Together, they raised an incredible £2,933.75 (incl. GiftAid) towards patient care!

Reflecting on the challenge, Lisa shared:

“It was such an amazing experience and we’re all so proud of ourselves for completing the challenge and for raising the amount of money we have.

It exceeded our expectations which is amazing. We were such a great team and we had Richard with us every step of the way. I took a photo with him at the top of each peak!”

Thank you so much to everyone involved for your amazing support and dedication - we’re so grateful 💜

As we wrap up Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers across St Gemma’s Hospice.

Sue Shillito has been volunteering with our Bereavement Support Café for 10 years. After her mum received compassionate care from St Gemma’s, Sue first came to us as someone supported by our bereavement services. Today, she offers that same kindness and understanding to others navigating grief.

Each month at the café, Sue helps create a welcoming space where people can talk, listen, and feel less alone. She describes it as a privilege to walk alongside people on their bereavement journey, supporting them through some of the hardest moments in their lives.

Sue’s story is just one example of the compassion, time and care our volunteers bring to St Gemma’s every day. We are deeply grateful to everyone who gives their time to support patients, families and our wider community.

Thank you for everything you do.

For Volunteers’ Week, we’re sharing Pat’s story, and it’s a lovely reminder of the difference volunteers make across St Gemma’s shops.

Pat is a volunteer at our Hunslet shop and previously worked as a shop manager within St Gemma’s. She has a real passion for charity retail and enjoys being part of the day-to-day life of the shop, from serving customers and working on the till, to creating eye catching window displays and keeping everything running smoothly.

She really values the people she meets through volunteering and the sense of fulfilment it brings from giving time to something close to home.

Pat says:
“Being a volunteer gives as much back as you give, a real sense of fulfilment.”

A huge thank you to Pat, and to all our volunteers for everything you do.
