Sub-Saharan Africa has a quarter of the world's disease burden, but just 3% of the world's health workers. Amref Health Africa is Africa's leading health charity. Working primarily with women and girls, our vision is of lasting health change within Africa's most vulnerable and remote communities. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, we are a truly African organisation, which combines grassroots develo

pment with government partnerships. This ethos defines our community-based approach and echoes across each and every one of our projects. We started life in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa. Beginning with aeroplanes to provide the most remote communities with health care, we've always used the tools of our time to bridge the gap between heath systems and people. Today we use e-learning, telemedicine, and mobile phones to spread health knowledge and care. Amref's work has won high-profile international awards such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Award for Global Health and the Conrad Hilton Humanitarian Award.

It takes around just £600 and 28 days to train a water handpump mechanic. That mechanic will then give back to thousands of people, providing clean, safe water for years to come.

Catherine Omona is one such mechanic. She's a single mother of five, a Community Health Worker (called VHT in Uganda), and now, an elected Woman Councillor.

She was trained through Amref’s Piwa Maleng project, and over the course of six years, she has rehabilitated 52 boreholes in Lamogi, Gurugu, Pabo, and Pogo sub-counties in northern Uganda.

Today, because of that training and experience, she holds an annual government contract to maintain 12 boreholes per year. With that income, she built a permanent home and is putting all five of her children through school.

When you invest in women to build skills, they build sustainability.
