As the sun sets on another summer, thoughts turn to autumn, and the last third of the year.
I don’t mind autumn but I don’t like winter so I’m trying to have and keep good habits to help me (sleep and exercise being key).
Many people get to January and look to change things. However we know Christmas (sorry, I know) will fast approach as it always does. It can be a tricky time especially for financial worries, stress, family relationships.
It’s a good time to have an internal audit about any issues arising and perhaps to begin to explore and work towards understanding yourself a bit better…..

Me ‘I’m popping out to buy two cute side tables for the cabin’.

The reality - going through drawers, cupboards, discovering empty boxes, things I’ve kept ‘just in case’ and getting close to overwhelm whilst knowing I need to finish what I’ve started!

A lot like therapy. You think you’re working on stress, anxiety, depression, OCD. You start exploring and unpacking; and then you realise everything is connected - past beliefs, relationships, core values, beliefs all make you the unique human that you are, and your own way of seeing the world.

It can be messy, overwhelming and at times you want to walk away from it. The good news is the ‘mess’ means you’re doing the work and making progress.

Trust the process 💚 (promise this will be sorted by next week!)

‼️ I wanted to share something really important ‼️

It’s is vital that “counsellor” and “psychotherapist” become official, registered titles.

As it stands, anyone—coaches, influencers, even people with zero training—can call themselves a therapist and have and seek access to people who are really struggling due to the postcode lottery of mental health support we currently have.

As part of my onboarding process, I speak to every single person before we work together, and I always stress this: even if we don’t end up working together, please, PLEASE ensure your therapist is either BACP or NCPS registered (I’m with NCPS).

A prerequisite for being registered is we’re ethically trained by a registered training provider, we have regular supervision, we’ve undertaken hours of our own therapy (so we don’t live in our own heads during your session, and don’t come at your stuff from a point of unresolved trauma!) we’re insured, and there’s a proper complaints process.

BUT sadly, this isn’t mandatory yet—so you can end up with someone who has no oversight and can do real harm. I’m linking a petition here—please sign it, and share it if you wish.

Petition: Legislate for the statutory regulation of 'Counsellor' and 'Psychotherapist'

Legislate to make ‘Counsellor’ and ‘Psychotherapist’ protected titles regulated by the HCPC. The Government should also review how this could include influencers and life coaches offering mental health services, ensuring all are subject to mandatory fitness-to-practise oversight.
