Did you see us there?

More photos to come of our time at the event, and hope everyone is staying safe in this heat!!

Last week we posted a photo of one of our team that looked familiar. We couldn't put our finger on why.
Then we realised...

Sometimes we have nice sunny days. And on those days, if you're doing admin, it can be nice to do it outside in nature.
Problem is when the sun creates so much glare that you can't read what's on the screen anymore...
Would never happen to any of our team though...๐Ÿ˜…

Some of the things mentioned in our Deaf Awareness week videos might have been quite shocking, but we hope it has made people more aware of the issues caused by lack of access and inclusion!
Did anything in it really surprise you? Is there anything you've always wanted to know about Deaf or Deafblind people?
Let us know, and maybe we can make a video on it in future!

Imagine this: Youโ€™re ill. Not sure why, but you just feel terrible. Stomach hurts, head hurts, itโ€™s hard to concentrateโ€ฆ So, you have to go to the hospital or the doctors. Except when you get there, they are all speaking Latin. You have told them time and time again you donโ€™t understand Latin, but they continue. They ask how youโ€™re feeling, give you medications, but you canโ€™t be sure these are the correct medications, or how to take them, since all the instructions were in Latin. How awful would this be when you already feel rough??
Welcome to the experience for many Deaf people in the UK. Despite requesting notes on their records that they require a BSL interpreter, despite constant reminders to staff that they canโ€™t hear, and despite the NHS and other healthcare establishments being required to provide interpreters and access to all informationโ€ฆit often doesnโ€™t happen.
Here are some first-hand experiences from Deaf people who have struggled in the world of healthcare.
This week, 4th May - 10th May, is Deaf Awareness week. This year, the theme is 'Right to understand - Together, we break barriers'. Here at BSL Plus we have been shining some light on just a few of the barriers faced by the Deaf Community as a result of lack of access and understanding. Why donโ€™t you look back on our other videos this week to see what youโ€™ve missed!

As well as going about our day to day lives, we will all have special events every now and then for things such as award ceremonies or celebrations, school plays etc etc. But if youโ€™re Deaf, what happens? Do you miss out on these wonderful things most of us take for granted?

Even now, there are still so many assumptions made about what Deaf people can and canโ€™t do. This is the topic of conversation in todays video, as well as when people make assumptions that someone isnโ€™t Deaf.

For most of us, going to the cinema or the theatre is as simple as checking we can make one of the many dates and times available, and making sure we can get there. Deaf people have an added complication: out of all the dates and times listed, there may be only one that is accessible. And if the Deaf person canโ€™t make that one? Tough.
Today, we talk a bit about the process involved in this form of entertainment that so many of us take for granted.

Can you imagine being with your family, but not being able to understand what theyโ€™re saying? Or being on public transport, and missing your stop or getting lost because you canโ€™t hear the announcements?
Sadly, this is the reality for many Deaf people in the UK, with hearing families not always making the effort to include the Deaf person.
Some buses and trains now have visual announcements as well as auditory ones, but there is still always room to improve!
