When your alarm system goes off around other people…

Have you ever noticed that you can feel on edge around other people, even people you’re close to?
You might find yourself thinking about whether they like you, whether you’ve said the right thing, or whether they’re upset with you. Perhaps you notice yourself paying a lot of attention to other people’s reactions and trying to make sure everyone is happy.

You might change what you say depending on who you’re with.
You might struggle to say no.
You might apologise when you haven’t really done anything wrong.
You might go along with things you don’t actually want to do.
You might spend ages afterwards replaying conversations and wondering whether you came across badly.

Sometimes, people pleasing can be less about simply wanting to be kind or helpful, and more about trying to manage that feeling of “What if they don’t like me?”

It can feel as though your alarm system is constantly scanning for signs that someone might be unhappy with you. When low self-esteem is part of the picture, other people’s reactions can start to feel even more important.

If you’ve developed a belief that you’re not good enough, too much, difficult, or that you need to be liked to feel worthy, then keeping other people happy can become a way of making yourself feel safe.

“If they’re happy with me, everything is okay.”
“If I don’t upset anyone, they won’t leave or reject me.”
“If I’m helpful enough, they’ll like me.”

The problem is that this can leave you constantly monitoring other people and putting their needs ahead of your own. Your alarm system never really gets the chance to switch off.

CBT can help you understand this cycle and, importantly, begin to build a different relationship with yourself.
You don’t have to keep earning your place with other people. You don’t have to be liked by everyone to be good enough.

Have you noticed your alarm system going off when you’re around other people?

I’ve just written something I’ve been wanting to put into words for a while…
A blog about Kinesiology and menopause , but really it’s about learning to listen to your body at a time when everything seems to be changing at once.
Did you know that in Chinese Medicine menopause isn’t seen as a decline at all? It’s called the Second Spring : the energy that once poured outward finally turning inward, becoming wisdom, clarity and personal power.
I found that reframe completely transformative both personally and in my clinic work.
I hope it resonates. Please share with any woman in your life who might be navigating this transition and feeling like nobody gave them the new rulebook.

Earth element, quite literally underfoot. 🌍

Right now we’re in that in-between time, moving from summer’s blazing Fire energy into late summer’s Earth steadiness. This soft golden interlude, between the full blaze of summer and autumn’s first crispness, has its own quality and own season in Chinese medicine : the light turns thick and amber, the harvest is in or nearly so and nature pauses before its long exhale into darkness.

This is Earth energy, the capacity to pause, to gather, to receive the abundance.
If you’ve felt scattered lately, this is your sign to come back to center.

Read Your Body: Restore Your Energy - my 6 week online Five Element course . This October, come home to yourself — starts 8th October, early bird pricing ends 15th September. Link in comments .

A Reflection on the Evolution of Iyengar Yoga

I recently read Rajviji H. Mehta’s “Evolution of the Brand Iyengar Yoga” in Yoga Rahasya Vol. 32, no.1 2026, and it left me with much to reflect upon.

Iyengar Yoga did not begin as a brand.

Guruji did not set out to create one. He began with his own practice, his experience with students, his relentless observation and experimentation, and his desire to find effective ways to help people. In the early years, there were very few students. There was no marketing strategy, no social media and no promise of fame or financial reward.

The growth happened organically through the transformation people experienced and through word of mouth. What eventually became known as “Iyengar Yoga” was built through practice, precision, experience, discipline and a genuine connection between teacher and student.

Today, the name Iyengar Yoga carries recognition around the world. With that recognition comes responsibility.
The article reminds us that props, alignment, sequencing and therapeutic applications are important but they are only part of what makes this tradition distinctive.

The deeper question is about the teacher behind the teaching. Are we teaching from the heart, from experience and from a genuine desire to serve? Or are we simply teaching because it is our job?

As teachers, perhaps our greatest responsibility is not to promote the brand, but to preserve the integrity of what Guruji gave us.

It is time to reflect.
