For carers supporting individuals with complex needs, bathing should be a comfortable and well-managed experience at every stage.

The Gemini MX, now patent pending, has been developed with this in mind.

As part of the proven Gemini range, it combines power-assisted bathing with an integrated platform - helping to reduce transfers and support better working conditions for carers.

Alongside dual lift functionality for optimal working height, multi-position back and footrests, and BioCote® antimicrobial protection for enhanced hygiene, the MX’s specialist mattress is designed for comfort and ease of use:

• Winged features provides extra padded surface and transfer area - ideal for individuals with lots of movement
• Soft, comfortable construction with a textured surface for enhanced grip
• Two-part design for easier storage, cleaning and handling
• Straps utilised for mattress during bathing

Together, these features help deliver more efficient care routines, improved hygiene standards and a more supportive environment for both carers and bathers.

: Abacus, in association with KS Occupational Therapy, will present 'Bath, shower or both?' seminars at the Autumn’s DFG Champions Roadshows.

The Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 sets out the purposes for which bathroom adaptations can be funded by a Disabled Facilities Grant.

We will explore the ‘Bath, shower or both’ purpose in presentations delivered by three specialist housing occupational therapists: Kate Sheehan RCOT Fellow University Worcester Fellow, David Owen and Dr Ruth Parker.

The DFG Champions Roadshows are organised by Foundations, the National Body for Home Improvement Agencies, and provide a platform for housing and healthcare professionals to share ideas, learn from experts and connect with fellow professionals responsible for supporting residents with additional needs. Each event includes a series of educational presentations.

👉 Join us in Southampton on 9th September for the first Autumn DFG Champions Roadshow, and for the following dates:

📍 Liverpool | 16 September
📍 Wolverhampton | 23 September
📍 Sheffield | 7 October
📍 Chiswick, London | 14–15 October

💻 New CPD webinar for Occupational Therapists:
Understanding the English legislation around bathroom adaptations.

We're delighted to announce that Kate Sheehan, Fellow of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, will be hosting our latest Abacus Academy webinar, exploring how English legislation can be used as an enabling framework for high-quality, person-centred adaptation practice.

It will consider how occupational therapists can use legislative duties and professional reasoning to make bathroom recommendations that are lawful, proportionate, cost effective and responsive to long-term need.

🗓️ 6th October 2026, 12 noon – 1pm. LIVE with Q&A

Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the key legislation and policies relating to bathroom adaptations
- Apply legislative knowledge alongside clinical reasoning to develop proportionate and cost-effective recommendations.
- Recognise how legislation can support, rather than restrict, holistic and client-centred occupational therapy practice.
- Challenge blanket statements or local practices that may not reflect individual assessed bathing need.

- Our latest blog explores what CPD really asks of occupational therapists.

CPD (Continuing Professional Development) can sometimes feel like a hoop to jump through, but as Kate Sheehan, Occupational Therapist, discusses, the HCPC is clear that CPD is not just formal courses. It is any activity from which you learn and develop.

"The conversation with a colleague about a complex case. The news item I turned on during the drive home, and asking what it meant for my practice. The mandatory training. The specific skill developed to meet a particular need."

The important part, Kate writes, is reflection: what have you learned and what will you do differently as a result? How will it change the way you use your knowledge and skills with the next person you assess?

"Tim would start shaking when being showered and it was simply not nice for him being manhandled... A specialist bath changed all of this.”

Tim lives in an accessible bungalow with an adapted bathroom funded by a Disabled Facilities Grant, and is supported by carers and his father, Shaun.

He had been desperate to find an alternative to showering as he would regularly get cold. So his occupational therapist arranged a demonstration of a specialist Abacus Gemini 2000 bath, and it proved to be a turning point.

This hoist-compatible and height-adjustable, oversized bathing solution has made ‘a huge impact’ on his life, helping to ease problems associated with cerebral palsy and improving his overall well-being.

Tim says:
"It’s been brilliant being able to relax and have a soak. I’ve wanted a proper bath for many years. My needs weren’t being meant with a standard shower, whereas the Gemini has proven to be the solution. It loosens up my muscles and helps me sleep."

We're looking forward to exhibiting at the full Autumn DFG Roadshow series, organised by Foundations - the National Body for Home Improvement Agencies.

With the government looking more closely at unspent DFG funding, the sessions at each Roadshow will focus on how services can speed up delivery, make better design decisions and reduce the avoidable confusion that slows projects down.

At Abacus, we work closely with occupational therapists, HIAs, housing teams and DFG officers to deliver person-centred accessible bathroom adaptations.

At the Autumn Roadshows, we'll be discussing how our end-to-end service, from client assessment through to installation and aftercare, helps streamline delivery while supporting more people to remain safe and independent at home.

Our first stop is Southampton on 9th September at the Novotel Hotel, and we'll also be attending:

📍 16th September – Liverpool, The Liner Hotel
📍 23rd September – Wolverhampton, Grand Station Hotel
📍 7th October – Sheffield, Mercure St Paul's Hotel
📍 14th & 15th October – Chiswick, London, Clayton Hotel

If you're a housing or healthcare professional interested in attending the DFG Roadshows, book your free place here: https://www.foundations.uk.com/foundations-hub/upcoming-events/
