This is what shea butter looks like before it becomes soap.

Not quite as glamorous as the finished bars, perhaps, but it's one of the ingredients you'll find in every bar of Damn Fyne Soap.

I use shea butter alongside olive oil and coconut oil in my soap recipe. Before a batch can begin, the solid oils and butters are weighed out and gently melted, ready to be combined with the rest of the ingredients.

It's one of those parts of soapmaking that customers rarely see — great big pots of solid butter rather than neat little bars lined up on a shelf.

One of the loveliest parts of running Damn Fyne Soap is how many familiar names I see coming back.

Some customers have their favourite soap and order it again and again. Others work their way through the different blends and eventually find the one they keep returning to.

When I'm boxing up another batch, it's easy to forget that many of these will end up with people who've been using my soap for years.

For a small business, that means rather a lot.

Not everything I make is soap.

A batch of Westcoast Wildflower Botanical Body Oil being made and bottled in the workshop.

It’s a blend of lightweight plant oils with seaweed extract and essential oils, mixed in small batches before each bottle is filled and finished by hand.

From a jug of golden oil to the finished bottle, all made here in Tarbert on Loch Fyne.

A little batch of Highland Mint Lip Butter.

Made with cocoa butter, coconut oil and plant wax, with peppermint essential oil for that fresh minty scent.

Each one is poured by hand into its little cardboard pot and left to set before the labels go on.

Simple ingredients, made in small batches here in Tarbert on Loch Fyne.

And yes, getting every one of those tops perfectly smooth is strangely satisfying.
