Fun fact: the first time I ever went to see a Rocky Horror showing (last photo), I was 24 and in the very early weeks of my pregnancy. I felt horrendous, was mildly terrified, knowing i had a one-year contract at my grad job at the Students’ Union (so I knew I’d soon have a new baby and potentially no job) in a rocky on/off relationship and feeling very self conscious in my Magenta outfit 🧹
People had PLENTY of opinions at the time about what I should do about my pregnancy, about what my life should look like at the time.. 😅
Anyway during those early weeks, I went with my 2 best friends to see a showing of Rocky Horror, and met so many hilarious, brilliant people dressed in AMAZING costumes, completely and unapologetically themselves, and who quite literally did not give AF what anybody else thought of them.
Something about being surrounded by that energy, at that particular moment in my life, lit something in me.
In what felt like a very uncertain chapter, I stopped thinking so much about what life was ‘supposed’ to look like. I didn’t actually need to have it all figured out? And I didn’t ‘need’ everyone else to understand or approve of my life choices. I just needed to trust myself enough to live my own life.
I left that night knowing that whatever happened next, it was going to be fine, maybe not right away 😂 but eventually..
Anyway 10 1/2 years later and a few more showings, theatre productions later (and a mom to a 10 year old) a particular line from the show still hits me with the same impact it did all those years ago.

Thank you Tim Curry, for showing generations of misfits how to be unapologetically themselves 👄
