“On sleep depends happiness and suffering, strength and weakness, clarity and confusion. And life itself.”

Charaka wrote this in the Ayurveda scriptures over two thousand years ago. It remains one of the clearest statements ever made about the importance of sleep, and one that modern research continues to validate.

Sleep is when the nervous system recovers, the immune system consolidates, and the body processes what the day has accumulated. It is not a passive state. It is when much of the body’s most important maintenance takes place.

In clinical practice, poor sleep rarely exists in isolation. It is usually connected to something else, the digestion, the stress load, the daily routine, or a nervous system that has been running without adequate recovery for longer than the person realises.

Ayurveda has always treated it this way. Not as a symptom to manage, but as a signal worth understanding properly.

— Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana XXI.36

People often pause here before they sit down. Something in the space seems to ask for it. :)

We believe that healing begins the moment you step into an environment that feels different from the rest of your day. Ayuwanna was built around that understanding.

There is an Ayurvedic practice so simple it is easy to dismiss. And so effective that the classical texts prescribed it as part of the nightly routine for almost everyone.

Pada Abhyanga. A warm medicated oil massage to the feet.

The feet in Ayurveda are considered one of the most important parts of the body to care for, and one of the most neglected. The soles of the feet contain nerve endings that connect to virtually every organ and system in the body. Applying warm medicated oil here before bed does something immediate to the nervous system. It draws excess Air and heat downward, away from the head and the mind, and grounds the body in a way that invites genuine sleep rather than forcing it.

Done with the right medicated herbal oil, chosen for your constitution by your physician, Pada Abhyanga does considerably more than help you sleep.

It improves circulation, particularly in the lower limbs. It calms an overactive nervous system and reduces anxiety held in the body. It supports vision, which in Ayurveda is connected to the health of the feet through specific energy channels. It lubricates the joints and eases the stiffness that arrives in the morning before the body has had time to warm up. It reduces dryness that signals Vata imbalance in the body. And done consistently over time, it is considered one of the most effective daily practices for grounding and longevity.

The medicated oil used matters enormously. At Ayuwanna, oils are prepared in our in-house pharmacy and prescribed specifically for your constitution. This is not a generic product off a shelf.

This is a classical practice. Ten minutes before bed, done consistently, is one of the simplest things you can add to your routine for your health.

At Ayuwanna, Pada Abhyanga is offered as a treatment within a physician-led treatment line.

There is something about the way old buildings hold light that newer ones cannot replicate. The thick walls, the high ceilings, the wooden staircase that has been climbed by more people than we will ever know. Light in a space like this does not just illuminate. It settles.

Ayurveda has always paid attention to light. To the quality of the morning, the shift of the afternoon, the importance of letting the day actually end before asking the body to rest. The spaces we inhabit are not separate from our health. They are part of it.

This is where you arrive at Ayuwanna. Before any treatment, before any consultation, there is this. A building that has already been holding something long before you walk through the door.

Jasmine has been part of Ayurvedic eye care for a very long time. A simple infusion of fresh jasmine flowers steeped in clean water, used as a gentle eye wash, is one of the oldest remedies in the tradition for tired, strained, or irritated eyes. It cools, it soothes, and it brings relief in a way that feels immediate.

The reason it works is quite specific. In Ayurveda, the eyes are considered a primary seat of Pitta, the energy that governs heat and inflammation in the body. Jasmine is naturally cooling and anti-inflammatory, which makes it particularly well suited to caring for them. When the eyes feel hot, dry, or overworked, and most of ours do, this is exactly the kind of remedy Ayurveda would reach for first.

Most people know they are not sleeping well. What they do not always know is how much that one thing affects everything else.

The Ayurveda scriptures describe sleep as the time when the body does its most important work. Repairing tissue, rebalancing the doshas, allowing the mind to process and settle. When sleep is consistently poor, the effects show up everywhere. In digestion, in immunity, in mood, in skin, in the abilityn to concentrate. Ayurveda does not treat these as separate problems. It traces them back to what is disrupting rest at the root.

Yoga arrived at a similar understanding through its own tradition. Yoga Nidra, the practice of conscious sleep, guides the body and mind into a state between waking and deep rest where the nervous system can reset in ways that ordinary sleep sometimes cannot reach on its own. For people carrying chronic stress or a mind that will not quiet at night, it can be a genuinely useful practice.

Together, these two traditions offer something practical for anyone whose sleep has not been what it should be.

We are putting together The Sleep Protocol that brings both into one space. It is for people who want to understand what is behind their sleep, and what they can do about it.

The Charaka Samhita speaks of Brahma muhurta, the sacred hour before sunrise when the mind is most clear and the body most receptive.

Most of us never meet this hour. We fall asleep too late, wake up already behind, and spend the day chasing energy we never recovered overnight.

But rising and resting are not separate practices. They are two ends of the same rhythm. The quality of your sleep decides how your sunrise feels. The way you greet your morning decides how your body winds down at night.

This is the imbalance we are addressing in The Sleep Protocol, a workshop combining Ayurveda and yoga for the modern, overextended adult. Join Shobana Cooke and the Ayuwanna team on July 4th, 6:00 to 7:48pm, for an evening designed to recalibrate your relationship with rest.

You will leave with a guided Yoga Nidra recording, a sleep oil blend, a herbal eye pillow, and sandalwood incense cones to support the practice at home.

You haven’t actually slept properly in weeks. You just got used to it. 😴

The Sleep Protocol, teach your body how to rest
Ayuwanna x Shobana Cooke

Poor sleep isn’t just tiredness. Ayurveda has always treated it as a root cause, not a symptom, the thing quietly behind your low energy, your short temper, your inability to focus past 3pm.

This is one evening to actually deal with it. Ayurveda and yoga together, looking at what’s disrupting your rest instead of just telling you to put your phone down earlier.

You’ll also leave with tools to keep it going at home: a Yoga Nidra recording, a sleep oil blend from our dispensary, a herbal eye pillow, and sandalwood incense cones.

Coming Home to Yourself
Awareness is the beginning of healing

An evening of self inquiry, deep reflection, and shadow work with Araliya de Silva, who shares her own spiritual journey in the hope of helping others awaken and heal from their suffering.

This is a space to sit, to question, and to look honestly at what is, including the parts of ourselves we usually turn away from. Some of what surfaces may be difficult. All of it is welcome.

Come as you are. Leave a little more yourself.
