When heavy rains fall, the damage doesn't end when the water recedes. For some families, the scars last a lifetime.
For more than two weeks, Calabar experienced persistent rainfall, leaving several communities submerged by severe flooding. During this period, a devastating landslide claimed the lives of children from the same family, while additional lives were lost in the days that followed. No amount of compensation can replace the lives lost or the pain their loved ones now endure.
As we mourn with the affected families, this tragedy should also prompt us to reflect on our shared responsibility in building safer and more resilient communities.
Governments have a critical role to play by investing in resilient infrastructure, strengthening disaster preparedness, and enforcing environmental regulations. However, as citizens, our everyday actions also matter. Proper waste disposal and keeping drainage channels free from blockage can help reduce the impact of flooding in our communities.
Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. While we may not prevent every disaster, we can reduce our vulnerability through responsible environmental practices, stronger policies, and collective action.
At Base 10, we believe that protecting our environment is ultimately about protecting people. Every action we take today contributes to a safer, healthier, and more resilient tomorrow.
May the lives lost remind us that environmental responsibility is not optional—it is a shared commitment to one another.

🌍 World Food Safety Day 2026

Food safety is often discussed in terms of regulations, standards, and hygiene practices. While these are important, there is another reality we must acknowledge: food safety risks are not experienced equally.

During a field observation in Calabar, we witnessed a situation that highlights this challenge. A mother and her children, having received food from a well-meaning individual, immediately began to eat. With no access to proper utensils or a safe eating environment, they relied on whatever was available, including reused and discarded materials.

This was not a matter of choice. It was a reflection of a deeper issue—the intersection of hunger, poverty, and food safety.

When hunger is immediate, food safety often becomes secondary.

As we commemorate World Food Safety Day, we must recognize that ensuring safe food goes beyond food handling practices. It also requires addressing the social and economic conditions that force vulnerable populations to make difficult choices.

At BASE 10, we believe that every individual deserves access not only to food, but to food that is safe, nutritious, and consumed in conditions that protect health and dignity.

The quality of the air we breathe, the soil that grows our food, and the water we drink all directly shape our nutrition and overall well-being. When ecosystems are degraded, food systems suffer — leading to poorer food quality, reduced crop yields, and increased risk of malnutrition.
A clean and balanced environment doesn’t just protect nature; it protects our plates and our bodies. From farm to fork, environmental health determines the safety, diversity, and nutritional value of the food we depend on every day.
This World Environment Day, we are reminded that promoting sustainability is also promoting better nutrition, stronger immunity, and healthier lifestyles for all.

Even though World Hunger Day was yesterday, the reality of hunger continues every day for millions of people around the world.

Food insecurity around the world has increased to an alarming level, and Nigeria remains one of the countries facing high levels of hunger and food insecurity.

Children and women are often the most affected by this crisis, as many families struggle daily to access enough nutritious food for healthy living.

As food insecurity continues to rise, so does malnutrition. Thousands of children suffer from severe acute malnutrition caused by prolonged hunger and lack of proper nourishment.

Hunger is not just about the absence of food — it is also about the lack of access to safe, nutritious, and balanced meals needed for growth, health, and survival.

Good nutrition in the first 1000 days of a child’s life — from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday — is extremely important for healthy growth and development.

One of the key recommendations during this stage is exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients and helps strengthen a child’s immunity and overall health.

However, many mothers are unable to practice exclusive breastfeeding consistently due to different challenges. In many low-income households, some mothers also struggle with poor nutrition themselves, making it difficult to maintain adequate nourishment for both mother and child.

This reminds us that improving child nutrition also means supporting mothers with access to proper nutrition, education, care, and community support.

Families are meant to be a place of care, protection, and support. Yet, many families continue to struggle with poverty, hunger, and the inability to provide basic meals for their children.

At Base10, we believe every child deserves nourishment, dignity, and hope.
