The Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State Branch, ably led by *Dr(Prof) Ureh Oparaodu* on behalf of the SOC and SEC joins the World Health Organization and the global medical community today, 31st May 2026, to commemorate *World No To***co Day* under the theme: “*Protecting Health, Promoting Life*.”

To***co use remains one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide, claiming millions of lives annually from cancers, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and chronic respiratory illness.

In Nigeria, the burden is real and growing, and Rivers State is not exempt.

As physicians and health advocates, we have a duty to speak plainly: to***co kills. No form of to***co, ci******es, smokeless to***co, sh**ha, or e-ci******es is safe. Every puff erodes health; every habit entrenched today becomes a life cut short tomorrow.

We call on every resident of Rivers State, young and old to:

✅ Refuse to***co in all its forms

✅ Support loved ones seeking to quit

✅ Demand smoke-free spaces in our communities

✅ Hold industries accountable for targeting our youth

To those already on the journey to quit, you are not alone. Seek help. Talk to your doctor. Your health is worth fighting for.

Today is International Day to End Obstetric Fistula.

Over 2 million women worldwide are living with obstetric fistula, a condition that is largely preventable and treatable, yet continues to devastate lives in silence.

This year’s theme says it plainly:
“*Her Health Is a Right: Invest in Ending Fistula and Childbirth Injuries*.”

A woman’s survival in childbirth is not a privilege. It is a right.

At NMA Rivers State Branch, ably led by *Dr(Prof) Ureh Oparaodu*, we stand firmly with every woman who has suffered in silence, and with every community working to change that story.

✅ PREVENT — Invest in quality maternal care and safe delivery

✅ TREAT — Expand access to timely and skilled fistula care

*DR. UREH ANNABEL OPARAODU ASSUMES OFFICE AS ACTING CHAIRMAN, NMA RIVERS STATE BRANCH*

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, announces a transition in Executive leadership following the bow-out of *Dr. Diamond Ezekiel Tamunokuro*.

In line with the Association’s constitution, *Dr. Ureh Annabel Oparaodu* has assumed office as Acting Chairman, while *Dr. Ogundele Abayomi* has been elevated to Vice Chairman 1.

The Branch salutes *Dr. Tamunokuro* for a tenure defined by purposeful leadership, strengthened stakeholder engagement, expanded health advocacy, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of physicians and the communities we serve. He leaves a legacy worthy of honour.

The incoming leadership has affirmed its commitment to continuity, unity, and transparent governance as the Branch advances towards the 2026 AGM and Branch Elections. All members are urged to remain engaged and united.

*”Remain connected to your roots and intentionally pass down the knowledge of your culture and tradition to future generations”*— Dr. Oparaodu at RiMDSA Maiden Clash of Clans Event

The Representative of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State , Dr. Ureh Annabel Oparaodu has called on medical students to remain deeply connected to their cultural roots and heritage.

Speaking at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Rivers State University, during the maiden “Clash of Clans” cultural event organized by the Rivers State Medical and Dental Students Association (RiMDSA), Dr. Oparaodu emphasized the importance of preserving tradition and intentionally passing cultural knowledge to future generations.

The event, held on 16th May 2026, brought together medical students from various “clans” across Rivers State in a vibrant celebration of identity, diversity, and unity. Each group showcased rich cultural heritage through performances, attire, and creative presentations, highlighting the beauty of Nigeria and Rivers’ diversity.

Dr. Oparaodu commended the students for their creativity, dedication, and impressive performances, describing the event as both educative and unifying. She noted that cultural awareness remains essential even within the medical profession, as it strengthens identity and fosters respect for diversity.

She further encouraged the students to see unity in diversity as a core strength, stating that it contributes significantly to harmony and collective growth within the state and beyond.

Her presence at the event reflects her consistent commitment to mentorship, capacity building, and student development within the medical community.

The event was widely applauded as a successful blend of culture, education, and student engagement under the umbrella of Rivers State Medical and Dental Students Association, reinforcing the importance of cultural pride among future healthcare professionals.

On this World Meningitis Day, 24th April 2026, the Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State Branch, ably led by *Dr Tamunokuro Diamond* reaffirms its commitment to the global goal of Defeating Meningitis by 2030.

Meningitis remains a significant public health threat in Nigeria and across Africa. Through vaccination, community education, and strengthened health systems, it is a battle we can and must win.

Watch for these symptoms:
• Sudden severe headache
• ⁠Stiff neck
• ⁠High fever
• ⁠Vomiting with Photophobia(sensitivity to light)
• Altered mental state or confusion
• ⁠Non-blanching skin rash)

✝️ It is finished. He has paid the price. We will keep doing the work.

On this Good Friday, we pause in solemn remembrance of the greatest sacrifice ever made — a love so profound it changed the course of history forever.

As we reflect on His suffering and surrender, we are reminded that out of the darkest moments comes the greatest light. His finished work fuels our unfinished work — to serve, to heal, and to give hope to those who need it most.
