INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY 2026

25 Years of Raising Awareness. Taking Action….Saving Lives.

Today, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch ably led by Dr.(Prof) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu joins the global community to commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), a day that brings people together to take action on overdose and promote awareness, compassion and prevention.

As IOAD marks 25 years of raising awareness about overdose, we are reminded that overdose is preventable and that timely intervention can save lives.

We encourage everyone to understand the risks of medication and substance overdose, avoid self-medication and unsafe drug use, and seek appropriate medical help whenever there is concern about overdose or substance use.

Let us replace stigma with knowledge, compassion and action.

Every life matters. Every overdose is a call to action.

3RD DAY OF AUGUST 2026 NMA NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING: NMA RIVERS SUSTAINS OPTIMUM REPRESENTATION

Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, Chairman, NMA Rivers State Branch, today led the Rivers State delegates into the 3rd Day of the August 2026 NMA National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting, where the delegation continued its active and robust representation.

The Rivers delegation remained fully engaged in the ongoing deliberations and activities of the NEC, contributing to discussions on issues affecting the medical profession, healthcare delivery and the welfare of medical practitioners.

NMA Rivers remains committed to effective representation, constructive engagement and advancing the interests of its members at the national level.

NMA RIVERS DELEGATION PARTICIPATES IN AUGUST 2026 NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, represented by Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, participated in the August 2026 National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of the Association.

The Rivers State delegation, led by the Chairman, joined medical leaders and delegates from across the country for critical deliberations on the future of the medical profession and Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The NEC meeting, which brought together leaders and delegates from across the country, focused on strengthening professionalism, accountability, ethical practice, collaboration and public confidence in the healthcare system.

Another memorable highlight was the identifying of distinguished members of the Rivers medical family, including Her Excellency, Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Ipalibo Harry Banigo, former Deputy Governor of Rivers State and Senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District, Dr. Tamunokuro Diamond Secretary General of NMA and other very distinguished members of NMA Rivers.

NMA RIVERS VISITS 2026 BATCH ‘B’ STREAM II MEDICAL CORPS MEMBERS AT NYSC ORIENTATION CAMP

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, under the leadership of Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, today visited the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II medical corps members at the Rivers State NYSC Orientation Camp, Nonwa.

The Chairman was represented by the Vice Chairman 1, Dr. Linda Dublin Green, who led the delegation to the Orientation Camp following an invitation from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Rivers State Secretariat, to deliver a presentation to the corps members.

Dr. Dublin Green conveyed the goodwill of the NMA Rivers Chairman and encouraged the young doctors to embrace their service year with professionalism, discipline, integrity, compassion, and commitment to duty. The visit provided an opportunity for the Association to interact with the doctors posted to Rivers State for their mandatory one-year national service and welcome them to the State.

She further assured them of the Association’s willingness to provide appropriate guidance, support, and mentorship throughout their stay in Rivers State while wishing them a fulfilling, and impactful service year.

NMA RIVERS ATTENDS COMMISSIONING OF OMOKU ZONAL HOSPITAL

The Chairman,Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu led members of the State Officers Committee (SOC), to the commissioning of the Omoku Zonal Hospital* today.

The Association commended the Rivers State Government for the investment in healthcare infrastructure and the strengthening of healthcare delivery across the State.

NMA Rivers noted that the commissioning of the facility represents an important step towards improving access to quality healthcare services for residents of the region and surrounding communities.

The Association remain committed to supporting any initiative that advance healthcare delivery, strengthen the health system, and improve the wellbeing of the people of Rivers State.

NMA RIVERS CHAIRMAN RECEIVED RIMDSA NATIONAL LEADERSHIP ON COURTESY VISIT

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, received the national leadership of the Rivers Medical and Dental Students Association (RIMDSA) led by Iheanyi Obuah-David on a courtesy visit.

RIMDSA is the umbrella body representing Rivers State indigenous medical and dental students across universities in Nigeria.

During the visit, the Chairman encouraged the students to uphold professionalism, discipline, and excellence, and to remain good ambassadors of Rivers State and the medical profession.

She described the students as the future of healthcare and pledged the Association’s support and mentorship wherever required to facilitate their academic and professional development.

The engagement further strengthened the commitment of NMA Rivers to supporting and mentoring the next generation of medical and dental practitioners.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, today led a representative of the Association to celebrate His Excellency, Sir (Dr.) Peter Otunuya Odili, CON, on the occasion of his 78th birthday.

NMA Rivers proudly acknowledges Sir Dr. Odili as a father of the medical community in Rivers State, celebrating a remarkable life of service, leadership, and enduring contributions to the growth of healthcare and human capacity development.
