After earthquakes. After floods. The research kept pointing to the same thing. π§
Prof. Julia Rucklidge and her team discovered that when people are well nourished after a traumatic event, their recovery looks dramatically different. Why? Because the fight or flight response is metabolically hungry. It depletes your body of nutrients fast. So giving people additional nutrients when they need it most actually moves the needle.
But Julia kept going. Because at the core of everything she does is the people out there who are suffering. That is why she became a clinical psychologist. And then she realised she could have a greater impact doing something else entirely, and ended up in the nutrition and mental health space almost by chance.
Being in the right place at the right time. Hearing the right story. Deciding to put science to the test.
That is what it looks like to be the critic and conscience of society that academics are supposed to be. π
