Meet Paul: 200+ classes strong and a true legend of the Āhua Studio crew!

Paul sums up the studio vibe perfectly - you can’t quite describe the secret sauce of Āhua Studio, but once you’re a part of it, you just get it. Whether he’s lifting with the team, keeping up with his two active kids or heading to "Club Sofa" at 9 PM, he brings the best energy to our community.

Apparently it’s the Wild West of Pilates right now…according to a recent article. While that might not be totally true for NZ there are some lessons we can learn and you should definitely seek out some key features of a safe studio when you are looking to start training
1. A studio who gathers your injury history, either at sign up or in person
2. Teachers who offer modifications to support your unique journey and needs
3. Teachers who understand why you are doing the exercises, not just copying an Instagram or AI flow
At Āhua Studio we collect your injury history before you even walk through the door, our teachers run through that with you in person and they are pros at modifications to either reduce the intensity or fire it up. And all our workouts are written by our Physiotherapist Director, and our teaching team regularly mentored in delivering those workouts safely and effectively

Different types of load still matter.

Not every session is about building muscle.
Sometimes the work is deeper than that.

Movement has a way of shifting emotion.
Music changes the room.
Breath changes the body.

And sometimes, the right session can unlock the tight spaces we’ve been carrying — not just through the hips, the spine, or the shoulders… but somewhere deeper too.

Today we turned the music up a little louder, left more space between the cues, opened the thoracic spine through rotation, and created freedom through the hips with lunging patterns and controlled movement.

But we also challenged the centre, built control under pressure, and stayed connected to every rep instead of rushing through it.

By the end of the session, the room felt different.
Something shifted, and that’s the power of these movements.

Alyx came in with a lot of motivation, like most people do at the start she was ready to get going, ready to feel better.

What’s different, what’s courageous, and what inspires us, is what she’s done since.

365 classes.

A full year of showing up, 4 days a week.

There were weeks where life got busy.
Days where she was tired.
Sessions she probably didn’t feel like doing.

But Alyx kept showing up for herself, her family, her future, and her classmates. And over time, something changed.

It stopped feeling like something she had to push for, and just became part of her life.

365 classes is a great milestone. But more than that, it’s proof to herself that she can do this, not just for a month or two, but for years, and have it serve her, build her and support her through all of life’s seasons.

Well done Alyx. You can! And we are so, so grateful to be part of your achievement.

Another expert, another superficial understanding of Pilates, another undermining of a practice that changes people’s lives and equips them with strength and capacity to live without pain…
The reformer is resistance training, and resistance training is strength training; it’s not hypertrophy training per se, but hypertrophy is not the only metric of strength that matters.
