Last weekend, members of New Zealand's Large Whale Disentanglement Team were called into action after a young male Tohorā (Southern Right whale) became entangled in commercial fishing gear near Rakiura/Stewart Island.

Local fishers quickly alerted Department of Conservation after discovering the whale and a specialist response team, including DOC, Environment Canterbury and members of the Whale Watch Kaikoura team, were deployed to assist.

The team successfully removed the entangling gear in around 45 minutes. Whale disentanglements are some of the most challenging and technically demanding wildlife rescues undertaken in New Zealand. Responders work in close proximity to large, powerful mammals, often in unpredictable sea conditions.

The Southern Right whale population is still recovering. We are incredibly grateful for all those involved helping to ensure future generations to experience the privilege of seeing these whales 🐋

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers, guardians, nurturers, and protectors in the ocean and on land. 💙

Today, we honour the deep bonds of care, guidance, and connection that shape life across generations. From humpback whale mothers guiding their calves through vast oceans to the humans who nurture, support, and protect those around them, motherhood reminds us of the power of love, resilience, and belonging.

At we.are.tohorā, we celebrate the nurturing spirit that connects us all to each other, to nature, and to the ocean.

Happy Mother’s Day. 🐋✨

Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough 🌊🐋

For a century, you have helped us see the ocean not just as a place but as a living, breathing world we are deeply connected to. Through your voice, millions have fallen in love with whales, marine life, and the fragile beauty of our blue planet.

Your storytelling has shaped generations of ocean advocates, scientists, and dreamers and continues to remind us why protecting this planet matters.

Thank you for turning wonder into action, and connection into care.

Here’s to a legacy that will echo through the oceans for generations to come.

Happy Earth Day 🌍
Did you know that about 71% of our planet is covered in water? Earth is truly a blue planet, and within this vast ocean lives one of its most powerful guardians: whales.

Whales are more than just awe-inspiring beings. They play a vital role in keeping our oceans healthy. Through their movements and nutrient cycles, they help support marine ecosystems, feed plankton, and even contribute to capturing carbon from the atmosphere. In protecting whales, we are protecting the balance of life in our oceans - and ultimately, our own future.

At we.are.tohorā, we believe in WHALENESS, the deep connection between whales, the ocean, and planetary and human wellbeing. Today is a reminder that caring for our planet means caring for its waters, and the giants that call it home.

Let’s honour, protect, and reconnect.
For the ocean.
For the whales.
For all of us.

🌍✨ Let’s celebrate Earth Hour
Tonight, we pause. We listen. We take action.

When
🕯️ Join us for Earth Hour
⏰ 8:30 – 9:30 PM (your local time)

What to do
Turn off your lights.
Step outside.
Breathe with the ocean.
Listen to the quiet.

Why
Because the Earth doesn’t need more noise — it needs our awareness.
Because small collective actions ripple into global change.
Because protecting our ocean, our whales, and our future begins with a single conscious hour.

This is more than switching off.
This is tuning in.
