Unfortunately, navigating perimenopause and menopause wasn't covered during my naturopathic training...

So, when I began experiencing frequent headaches in my mid-forties, I attributed it to food sensitivities. Looking back, those headaches were likely due to low progesterone. Around age 48, my sleep quality declined significantly, and I was awake for hours every night – this started to affect me mentally, worrying about not getting enough sleep and finding it hard to concentrate the next day and putting up with brain fog.

Then the hot flushes started. These just took over my body whenever they liked, and I felt embarrassed and I tried to ignore them. But they were happening every hour or two, day and night and I was started to wonder if this was my new life and it sucked, big time. I really was surprised that I was having these symptoms since I live a pretty healthy lifestyle and I was surprised that they started at my mid-forties! I also felt down like no one understood me and I tried not to make a big deal of it (living in a houseful of males I felt a little alone).

I started to wonder if my mother had silently endured a similar experience. as I never knew this as a teenager if she did.

Meanwhile I was taking every supplement under the sun to try and stop or reduce these symptoms, but nothing seemed to make a difference. And that’s when I then decided my quality of life was being affected too much and after much research into the dreaded HRT (which in previous years has had such a bad rap) I made an appointment with a holistic doctor.

The appointment was so positive. We discussed HRT options, associated risks, and benefits, leading to the initiation of estrogen cream and progesterone. The transformation was remarkable: improved sleep, elimination of hot flushes, enhanced mood, and heightened concentration.

I personally chose to get bioidentical hormones, the estrogen, progesterone and testosterone that are derived from a herb called wild yam so I pay for these each month however many women get the estrogen patches and progesterone capsules that are funded through their doctor.

Perimenopause and menopause are a very unique experience for each woman, if you need support please reach out to us at The Naturopathic Clinic for an appointment 022 017 6033 or book online at https://www.thenaturopathicclinic.co.nz

Endometriosis is NOT a HORMONAL CONDITION, it is an INFLAMMATORY DISEASE that is affected by hormones!!

πŸ“– The main symptom of endometriosis is pain.

πŸ“– Endometriosis is a disease of immune dysfunction.

πŸ“– Specific immune cells can stimulate abnormal nerve growth and increase inflammation and cause pain.

πŸ“– New research shows there are specific bacteria in the gut microbiome that may be one of the factors involved in the growth of endometriosis.

The following are important factors that need to be considered when you have Endometriosis:
πŸ‘‰ Address gut health
πŸ‘‰ Support a healthy immune function
πŸ‘‰ Identify and remove food intolerances
πŸ‘‰ Support with supplements - Berberine, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, curcumin

If you need support please contact us at The Naturopathic Clinic for an appointment 022 017 6033 or book online at https://www.thenaturopathicclinic.co.nz

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a group of symptoms that affects the stomach and intestines.

Symptoms may include abdominal pain, cramping, gas or bloating, diarrhoea, constipation or even both. Nausea, reflux, a feeling of fullness or a change in texture/colour of your stool are also symptoms of IBS. You may suffer from one or more of these symptoms.

As a Naturopath, I find the most common causes are:
πŸ‘‰ Food Intolerances
πŸ‘‰ Mineral deficiencies that affect the digestive system
πŸ‘‰ Overgrowths of the wrong type of bacteria in the gut, under growths of the good bacteria

If you would like to get your gut sorted or if you have other health issues you are concerned about please contact us at The Naturopathic Clinic for an appointment 022 017 6033 or book online at https://www.thenaturopathicclinic.co.nz

Today, let's address the lurking menace that affects so many New Zealanders homes & health – Household mould!

Mould not only damages the aesthetics of our abode but can also have negative impacts on our health.

Mould toxicity can cause many health issues including chronic fatigue, gut issues, fibromyalgia, food allergies, skin rashes, respiratory issues, cold symptoms and many more! The mycotoxins that come from the mould can damage our brain, liver, gut and kidney function.

I speak with clients all the time about this issue and what to be aware of, so I would like to share with my community what you should all know and some natural solutions to combat it:

🌿 Recognise the Signs: Keep an eye out for discoloured patches on walls, a musty odour, or water stains – these may be signs of mould growth. Mould spores can also be in hidden places such as behind your fridge or inside water units and aircon units, so it’s worth checking these out.

🌬️ Ventilation is Key: This is the time of year where moisture really starts to creep in. Ensure good airflow in your home. Open windows and let fresh air circulate to reduce moisture levels.

πŸ‹ Never use bleach on mould. For non-porous surfaces, use warm water, dish liquid, a splash of white vinegar and a damp microfibre cloth - for surfaces such as glass, tiles and aluminium. The optimal remedy for mould affected porous surfaces is replacement.

🌊 Fix Leaks Promptly: Address any leaks in plumbing or roofing promptly to prevent water damage and mould growth.

πŸƒ Keep Indoor Plants Mindfully: While plants can enhance your space, be mindful of overwatering, as excess moisture can encourage mould growth.

🧼 Regular Cleaning Ritual: Regularly clean and dry areas like bathroom tiles, shower curtains, and windowsills to prevent mould formation.

🌞 Sunlight Therapy: Sunlight is nature's disinfectant! Open curtains during the day to allow sunlight to reach damp areas.

Remember, a healthy home promotes a healthy you! I hope some of these tips help you with the battle against any household mould issues you may have and support your journey to wellness.

I’m excited to share with you today the incredible benefits of castor oil packs – nature's little secret to wellness and vitality!

Castor oil packs have been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a wide range of health issues, and their positive effects are truly remarkable.

When applied to the skin over specific areas, such as the liver, abdomen or joints, castor oil packs work their magic in several ways:

🌿 Detoxification: Castor oil packs gently stimulate the lymphatic system, supporting your body's detoxification process and helping to flush out toxins.

🌿 Inflammation Relief: These packs possess anti-inflammatory properties, providing soothing relief to achy muscles and joints, making them a great ally for those with arthritis or sore muscles.

🌿 Improved Digestion: Castor oil packs can be a game-changer for digestive issues, as they may help reduce bloating, cramps, and support a healthy gut.

🌿 Enhanced Circulation: By promoting blood flow to the targeted area, castor oil packs can aid in reducing pain and promoting healing.

We sell Castor Oil Packs with all the instructions, Organic Castor Oil and Organic Cloth, in the clinic - it is important to use organic cloth so you don't absorb the dyes from non organic cloth.

If you would like a pack (there is enough oil, cloth and herbs for 6 packs) then please contact the clinic 022 017 6033 or email [email protected]

Vitamin D for IMMUNE SUPPORT

As we move through the winter months our vitamin D levels decline as we have less sun and less skin exposed to the sun.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common over the winter months, and vitamin D is extremely important for your immune system. We want to keep our immune system strong enough to fight whatever bugs come along.

Vitamin D is also important to help calcium absorption for bone health, mood, memory, as well as for reducing hypertension.

Here in Hamilton, Pathlab charge $60 to get your vitamin D levels checked via a blood test.

The optimal value for vitamin D levels should be above 100. If your levels are below 100 then you would likely benefit from supplementing with vitamin D.

Beware that the approved level of vitamin D in New Zealand per capsule/drop is very low. I usually advise clients to take between 3,000-6,000IU daily over the winter months, although depending on the deficiency I might prescribe a higher dose.

Keep that immune system strong so you can fight off the winter bugs!!!

Have you ever felt like you just don't feel as well as you should?

Perhaps you're constantly tired, struggling with bloating, headaches, aching joints, brain fog or skin problems. These symptoms often creep up so gradually that we start to accept them as "normal."

One thing I always consider with clients is food intolerances.

Many years ago, I was the person looking for answers. I struggled with my own health for years before discovering that the foods I was eating were contributing to how I felt. Once I removed the foods I was intolerant to, my health improved dramatically.

In fact, that experience changed my life so much that I retrained as a naturopath. I wanted to help others find answers sooner than I did.

Food intolerances aren't the cause of every health condition, but they can play a significant role in symptoms such as digestive problems, fatigue, headaches, inflammation, joint pain and skin conditions.

Over the years I've seen hundreds of clients experience significant improvements in their health after identifying and removing foods they were intolerant to.

If you've been putting up with symptoms that you can't explain, food intolerances may be worth investigating.

🩸 Are your blood sugar levels really as healthy as you think?

For many women over 40, changes in hormones during perimenopause and menopause can make it much harder to regulate blood sugar and insulin. This can increase the risk of insulin resistance, prediabetes and eventually type 2 diabetes.

One blood test I always recommend is HbA1c, which shows your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. While many doctors only become concerned once results reach the prediabetic range, I like to see my clients sitting within an optimal range long before that.

I also recommend testing fasting insulinβ€”a test I rarely see requested by GPs. Fasting insulin can identify insulin resistance years before blood sugar levels become abnormal.

Insulin resistance doesn't just increase the risk of diabetes. It can also contribute to:
✨ Weight gain that's hard to shift
✨ Increased belly fat
✨ Fatigue and energy crashes
✨ Sugar cravings
✨ PCOS
✨ Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
✨ A harder transition through menopause

The earlier we identify these changes, the easier they are to address with nutrition, lifestyle and targeted natural support.

If you'd like to understand what your blood tests are really telling you, I'd love to help.
