Understanding Heart Valve Surgery

Your heart valves keep blood flowing in the right direction. When they become damaged or diseased, they may not open or close properly, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, or chest pain.

Heart valve surgery can involve repairing the faulty valve or replacing it with either a biological valve (from animal tissue) or a mechanical valve (made from durable materials). This helps restore healthy blood flow and improves overall heart function.

Some aortic conditions need careful monitoring rather than immediate surgery.
Regular review allows your specialist team to compare scans over time, consider changes in the aorta and decide whether your current monitoring plan remains appropriate. The timing and type of imaging depend on your diagnosis, scan results and individual risk factors.

Heart Surgeon Group’s Aortic Monitoring Clinic gives patients a structured pathway for specialist review and ongoing planning. If treatment becomes appropriate, your surgeon can explain the options and timing in the context of your health.

Early specialist input can help clarify the pathway for a patient with a potential surgical heart condition.

A referral to Heart Surgeon Group may be appropriate when a patient needs specialist cardiothoracic surgical assessment, a review of treatment options, or an opinion on the timing of surgery or aortic monitoring.

Please include the clinical question, relevant history, current medicines, investigation reports and available imaging details. If you are unsure whether a referral is appropriate, our team can help you identify the next step.

Contact [email protected] to discuss the referral pathway.

Your first appointment is a chance to understand your heart condition and talk through the next steps.

Your surgeon will review your medical history, current symptoms, test results and imaging. You can expect a clear discussion about the options that may suit you, including the benefits, risks and timing of any recommended treatment.

Bring a list of your medicines and questions. You are also welcome to bring a family member or support person. If more tests are needed, our team will explain what happens next and help coordinate them.

Every patient’s situation is different, so your plan will be tailored to you.

Heart surgery depends on a team that knows how to work together.

A patient’s care involves more than the surgeon in the operating theatre. Anaesthetists, perfusionists, nurses, cardiac specialists, administration staff and follow-up teams each bring focused expertise to the same care plan.

At Heart Surgeon Group, we value the conversations that happen across that team: reviewing information, planning the right approach and keeping patients informed as their care progresses.

That shared approach supports safe, coordinated and personal care from the first appointment through recovery.
