As World Alzheimer's Month continues, we're encouraging people to trust their instincts when something doesn't feel quite right. 🔎

Dementia | mate wareware isn't one condition. It covers more than 100 different types, including Alzheimer's disease. That's part of why the signs can look different from person to person.

Changes in memory and thinking aren't always easy to notice at first. Early signs can include forgetting recent events, struggling to find the right words, or changes in mood, judgement, or behaviour, or finding it harder to manage familiar, everyday tasks.

💬 If you've noticed changes in yourself or someone you care about, don't feel you need to work out what's causing them on your own. Talking to your GP can be a good place to start.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month – a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma and encourage earlier support for people living with dementia | mate wareware across Aotearoa.

Alzheimer’s disease was first identified in 1907, by German doctor Alois Alzheimer. It’s still the most common cause of dementia, but it’s only one of many types. Dementia is an umbrella term for approximately 100 different conditions that affect the brain.

💜 A dementia diagnosis is not the end of the story. It can be the first step towards information, support and planning for what comes next.

🌱 Early support can make a real difference to living well with dementia.

Small changes can make everyday banking easier to manage.

After a dementia diagnosis, it may help to look at:
🔹 Regular payments
🔹 Direct debits
🔹 Account alerts
🔹 Which accounts are still needed
🔹 Where key banking information is kept.

These are good conversations to have with your bank, a trusted support person, or a qualified financial adviser.

We don’t give financial advice, but we can help you find the right places to start. We’re also a great place to find dementia information, planning resources and local support

🧠 Protecting your brain health doesn't have to start with big changes. It can start with one.

In communities across Rotorua, Taupo and the wider Lakes rohe, we're having more conversations about brain health and what we can all do to look after our minds as we age.

Research tells us the lifestyle factors most connected to brain health are within reach for most people. Staying physically active. Staying socially connected. Managing your blood pressure. Looking after your hearing. Getting enough sleep.

None of these require a specialist. Some just need a little more intention than we usually give them.

At Dementia North, we're here to start these conversations in our communities. The Lakes rohe deserves the same access to brain health education as anywhere else in the country 💚

Caring for someone with dementia | mate wareware can feel isolating. We're here to change that 💙

Whether you're in Rotorua, Taupō, or a smaller community, caring for someone with dementia can sometimes feel like the rest of the world isn't quite keeping up with where you are.

You're adjusting. Constantly. And often quietly.

Dementia North has Dementia Advisors in the Lakes rohe who understand what it means to care in a smaller community, where services can feel further away and finding others in your situation isn't always easy.

We offer free support for care partners at every stage. And we're always a phone call away.

You don't need to be managing badly to reach out. We're here when things are okay and you just have a question. And we're here when things are hard 🤝

🎨 Could you help us welcome guests to Artful Minds?

Dementia North’s annual Artful Minds art exhibition and auction returns to Auckland on Thursday, 27 August.

We’re looking for friendly volunteers to join us during the evening at a central Auckland C*D location. So, put on your evening wear and help welcome guests, support the auction and artwork sales, or mix and mingle with guests and help everyone feel at ease.

You don’t need any event experience. We’ll give you the information and support you need. We’re simply looking for people with a warm, welcoming manner who care about the work Dementia North does alongside people living with dementia | mate wareware and their whānau.

Artful Minds brings together art, music, memory and brain health, with proceeds supporting our Living Well services.

The event begins at 6.00pm. If you’d like to volunteer or find out more, comment below or send us a direct message.
