Safe & Strong: Supporting Child Wellness in Seneca County

What a wonderful day of learning, connection, and partnership at the Safe & Strong Conference on Child Wellness hosted by Seneca County Public Health! The Seneca County Public Health team brought together community partners, with a special focus on school nurses, to help prepare for the upcoming school year, strengthen relationships, and ensure children and families have the support they need to thrive.

NYSACHO Executive Director Sarah Ravenhall was honored to attend and see firsthand the tremendous work happening in Seneca County. Even while responding to an active outbreak in their community, the team made time to bring partners together, share resources, build connections, and focus on the health and well-being of children.

That is local public health in action: responding to urgent needs while continuing to invest in prevention, preparedness, and strong community partnerships. Thank you to Seneca County Public Health for your leadership, dedication, and commitment to keeping your community safe and strong!

Making Back-to-School Health Fun! Congratulations to Washington County Public Health on a wonderful Teddy Bear Immunization Clinic with their partners at Family Service Association! Families and kids came together to learn about staying healthy and getting ready for a healthy back-to-school season. Kids even had the opportunity to bring their favorite stuffed bears for some very special “immunization protection” while learning more about how vaccines are administered.

NYSACHO Executive Director Sarah Ravenhall and her family had a wonderful time visiting the event, learning alongside the families, and joining in the fun! A big thank you to Alyssa Arlen, Deb Darfler, Allison McNeill, and Kim Sopczyk for co-hosting such a creative and engaging event. These kinds of community partnerships help make health education approachable, memorable, and fun for families.

Local public health was on full display at the Schoharie County Sunshine Fair! NYSACHO's Cristina Dyer-Drobnack dropped in on the Schoharie County Department of Health, which welcomed fairgoers with hands-on, family-friendly outreach and education across two engaging booths. Visitors could learn about children’s services, household emergency preparedness, rabies prevention, healthy eating, and other important programs that help keep residents healthy and safe. And if you’re visiting the Fair this weekend, stop by the department’s JUUL/vaping education trailer, a powerful prevention tool that helps parents, caregivers, and community members recognize everyday-looking items that may be used to hide vapes or other substances. Don't forget to play their public health arcade game as well and test your public health knowledge!

Last week at the NACCHO 360 Conference, NYSACHO Executive Director Sarah Ravenhall joined John Kalamaras, Director of Business Intelligence Analytics at DataGen, to present "From Data to Action: Using Workforce Data Dashboards to Strengthen Local Public Health."

During the session, Sarah and John unveiled the first look at an innovative workforce data dashboard that will soon be available to New York's local public health leaders. The dashboard is designed to provide actionable workforce insights that support recruitment and retention strategies, strengthen workforce planning, and help leaders effectively frame the value and needs of the local public health workforce.

This exciting initiative reflects NYSACHO's commitment to providing data-driven resources that help build a stronger, more resilient public health workforce across New York State.

Partnerships in action!

Erie County showcased the power of collaboration during last week's NACCHO 360 Conference with a presentation titled "M-Vax: A Unique Approach to Getting Students 'Up to Date' for School Attendance."

Commissioner Gale Burstein, Melinda Haas, Jaclyn Samulski, Mai Nguyen, and Cindy Sickora shared how partners across Buffalo came together to help children and families overcome barriers to receiving school-required immunizations. Their innovative collaboration improved access, supported students in meeting school attendance requirements, and demonstrated how strong community partnerships can lead to better health outcomes.

Congratulations to the Erie County team for highlighting this impactful work on the national stage and showcasing how local public health partnerships are making a meaningful difference for children and families in New York.

Albany County was well represented at last week's NACCHO 360 Conference in Louisville, with its public health leaders sharing innovative work and receiving national recognition.

Sara Lubera, Public Health Planner, presented **"Integrating Principles of Fairness and Inclusive Access in Upstate New York: Empowering High-Risk Communities to Prepare,"** highlighting strategies to strengthen emergency preparedness through inclusive planning and community engagement.

Charles H. Welge, Director of Public Health Planning and Education, was also selected to present, sharing Albany County's work on **Process Milestones** and the department's approach to continuous quality improvement.

Adding to an already impressive week, Albany County Department of Health was recognized with a **NACCHO Model Practice Award**, honoring its innovative work and commitment to advancing local public health.

NYSACHO Public Policy and Program Director Cristina Dyer-Drobnack visited her home county’s Project Rescue Summer Camp, sponsored by the Schoharie County Department of Health and held at the Schoharie Fire Department. The camp gave Schoharie County teens ages 12–16 a hands-on look at emergency preparedness, fire safety, EMS, rescue work, and public safety careers. Throughout the week, Schoharie firefighters jumped in to share their work, answer students’ questions, and help bring the realities of fire service and emergency response to life. Teens learned real-life skills like building go bags, practicing CPR/AED use, planning home fire escape routes, seeing rescue tools in action, meeting K-9 units, and learning about Life Flight. Programs like this help teens build confidence, learn how to stay safe, and see themselves as future emergency responders and community leaders.
