Affordable healthcare coverage means healthier families and communities.

On the 16th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act being signed into law, New Mexico has much to celebrate. When Congressional Republicans allowed key ACA subsidies to expire and premiums to skyrocket, lawmakers stepped up to keep costs from rising in our state. As a result, we have seen a surge in enrollment, while many other states saw coverage drop.

Thank you, President Barack Obama, for paving the way and for recognizing New Mexico’s leadership in protecting access to affordable healthcare.

New Mexico is the only state in the country to fully replace expired federal health insurance subsidies — keeping an estimated 27,000 New Mexicans from losing coverage and adding 10,000 more. We are proud to lead the nation in protecting affordable health insurance.

“Without the subsidies, an estimated 27,000 New Mexicans would have dropped their insurance. Instead, sign-ups have surged, with an additional 10,000 people now covered.”

Thanks to years of thoughtful planning and budgeting, New Mexico is the only state that has been able to fully backfill the federal subsidies for Obamacare plans that Congressional Republicans allowed to expire.

This session, with House Bill 4, we strengthened our investments in keeping healthcare affordable for New Mexicans, no matter what happens at the federal level.

We’re halfway through the legislative session, and two critical healthcare affordability solutions are in motion—championed by families, providers, and healthcare advocates across New Mexico.

The version of HB 2 passed by the House this week took important steps to address healthcare coverage gaps caused by federal cuts. But one major gap remains, and the Senate must act now to close it or 15,000 New Mexicans with humanitarian protections will lose their only affordable coverage option through no fault of their own.

At the same time, HB 4 would strengthen the Health Care Affordability Fund so coverage remains stable and affordable for New Mexicans long-term, even as federal changes threaten access.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!

👉🏼 NOW: Take action to urge the Senate Finance Committee to fill the remaining coverage gap in HB 2 to keep New Mexicans covered. https://advocacy.charityengine.net/Default.aspx?isid=2782

📢 NEXT: Stay tuned to take action to support HB 4 in committee next week!

The state budget is being decided right now.
The version passed by the House this week protects many families-but it still leaves a $92.9 million healthcare coverage gap.

If the Senate doesn't close that gap in HB 2, 15,000 New Mexicans-including refugees, asylees, and survivors of violence-could lose healthcare this fall through no fault of their own.

Take action now to urge Senate Finance Committee members to close the gap and protect coverage for our communities! Take action & share: bit.ly/FixMedicaidGaps

When coverage is unstable, the ripple effects hit patients, clinics, and entire communities. New Mexico deserves policy choices that make care easier to access and deliver.

We need solutions that protect patients and the people who care for them. That’s why we must fully leverage the Health Care Affordability Fund, the proven solution that that keeps coverage affordable in New Mexico, especially now as federal cuts drive premiums sky-high.

This week at the Roundhouse, families, providers, and advocates came together to urge lawmakers to fully fund the HCAF and pass HB 4, sponsored by healthcare champion Rep. Szczepanski, to protect health care in New Mexico. Affordable health care isn’t optional — it’s the backbone of strong communities and a functioning economy. In her recent op-ed, Dr. Caryn McHarney-Brown explains why service cuts, higher premiums, and coverage instability aren’t inevitable — and why New Mexico can and must prevent them.

Choosing to protect care in the face of federal cuts is the smartest, most compassionate, and most cost-effective decision we can make this Legislative session. https://sourcenm.com/2026/01/30/health-care-coverage-loss-and-higher-premiums-are-preventable/
