🤷🏾‍♀️ It is often assumed that we do not want to…

We have lowest rates of initiation.
We have lowest rates of continuation.
We have fewer referrals to lactation help.
We are given formula for our babies more often.

😢We have the trauma…

Enslaved Black women were forced to nurse White babies to the detriment and death of our own.

Our breasts are oversexualized.

It is difficult to find culturally congruent breastfeeding education support systems.

🧡 But through it all, Black women DO breastfeed!

Black Breastfeeding Week

08/29/2026

🧡A sweet little gathering to celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week with the perfect mix of moms in all stages of the motherhood journey…expectant, (second time) new, raising kids, empty nester.

🧡 We shared stories as we walked along the trail and spotted a baby green snake that we helped back to the creek 😂

🧡 Finished in 30 minutes and back at the café for more conversation over watermelon coolers and OLIPOP.

🧡 It was great to have friend to AfterBirth, IBCLC Dawn Maddux of Dawn Maddux, Public Health Nurse • Lactation Consultant with us! She gifted a ring sling to our mom with the newborn…perfect for the trail walk…comfy enough to have a nursing session while walking. Baby loved it! Mom loved it! Dawn is an amazing IBCLC who also works with our friends BirthMatters Doula Services

🧡 Laughs. Encouragement. Support.

This is how we show up for community.
No fluff. No fanfare. Just heart to heart 🧡
