So I went and met with Connie to try the treatment my patients have been getting such amazing results with. It’s called microcurrent neurofeedback, and before they started telling me about it, I’d honestly never heard of it. And it treats a lot… ADHD, anxiety, headaches.

I learned so much, and I’m still processing all of it.

Connie did a treatment on me… first a really thorough assessment, then the procedure itself, which only took about ten minutes. And I walked out feeling super relaxed. A few hours later, I still feel that way.

There was enough of a shift, a sense of serenity, that I really want to document my journey with this.

I was diagnosed with ADHD pretty young, and it’s still a very real part of my life. I feel it at work. I feel it at home, trying to stay organized. In some ways it’s my superpower! I’m up for anything, I’ve got a hundred ideas, I say yes to so much. But that same wiring is also what leaves me disorganized and overwhelmed sometimes.

I’m so grateful for all my nervous system regulation practices. I really think they’ve helped me to stay sane and cope. But I want to see if microcurrent neurofeedback can add another layer to my healing.

Can we talk about something nobody in midlife really talks about?

Loneliness.

Not the kind where you’re sitting alone in a dark room. The kind where you’re surrounded by people, busy with life, and still feel like nobody around you is in quite the same chapter.

Something shifts in your 40s. The friend group changes. Kids leave or life just gets louder. And suddenly you realize… you’re always the one making the plans. For everyone. And you’re a little tired of it.

You know Annapolis Moms? Great group. Love it. But I looked around one day and thought — where's the group for us? The ones who are done with carpool and ready for something else entirely. So I made it. Pull up a chair. 🥂

Something has shifted in the hormone world.

For years women were terrified of hormone replacement therapy.

And now? It’s being handed out like candy.

And listen, HRT can be a beautiful thing. It has changed lives.

But here’s what I’m seeing more and more —

Women who have been on estrogen for months. Still cycling. Still not feeling better. Sometimes feeling worse.

Labs: normal. Tongue: absolutely not. 👅

After 20 years of practicing both Chinese medicine and functional medicine, I keep coming back to one of the oldest diagnostic tools there is. The tongue. It’s something I’ve always used in my Chinese medicine practice and increasingly bring into my functional medicine work too.

In Chinese medicine the tongue is a map. Color, shape, coating … every detail tells me something about what’s happening with your hormones, your energy, your gut, your nervous system. And after 20 years it has never once lied to me.

Two of the most common patterns I see in perimenopausal women show up so clearly on the tongue:

The woman who is exhausted, bloated, foggy and gaining weight despite doing everything right. And the woman who is wired, hot, anxious and restless - too tired to function but too wound up to sleep.

Sometimes they’re the same woman on different days.

This is exactly why I practice both Chinese medicine and functional medicine. Because when you can see the pattern AND explain the biology, you know exactly where to start.

I spent 20 years in clinical practice watching that happen. And then it started happening to me.

I’m Dr. Sara Poldmae, acupuncturist, functional medicine practitioner, board certified menopause specialist, and someone who has personally navigated the whole beautiful unraveling of midlife.

It’s probably just stress” is not an answer. And honestly, neither is “it’s your hormones.”

When I’m looking at why someone is waking up at 2 or 3 AM I’m thinking about liver qi stagnation, cortisol spiking too early in the night, progesterone too low to hold you in deep sleep, blood sugar crashing, a nervous system that never fully downregulated. Usually more than one of these. Usually feeding each other.
