Ever feel like you're one wrong load of laundry away from losing it completely?

That white-hot flash of rage in midlife isn't random.

In Chinese medicine, we look at this through the lens of Liver Qi. The Liver is in charge of the smooth flow of energy and emotion through the whole body. When life keeps you stuck (in a job that drains you, a relationship that's run its course, a version of yourself you outgrew years ago) that energy doesn't just disappear. It stagnates.

Stagnant Liver Qi builds pressure. And pressure has to go somewhere. Often it rises, what we call Liver Yang rising, and shows up as irritability, snapping at your kids over nothing, a short fuse, or that feeling like you're one push away from exploding.

Here's the part I really want you to sit with: hormones can absolutely pour fuel on this fire. Estrogen shifts in perimenopause and menopause make everything feel more intense. But hormones aren't the root cause of the rage itself. They're the accelerant, not the fire.

The fire is whatever you've been avoiding looking at.

So before reaching for "it's just my hormones," I'd invite you to ask: what am I actually stuck in? What have I been tolerating that I no longer have room for? Rage is information. It's your body's way of saying something needs to change, and it's worth listening before it boils over.

If you are in Maryland, and this is you, comment CALL and I will send you a link to book a discovery call... Before you end up truly reaching your boiling point.

Magnesium. Ashwagandha. Whatever TikTok told you to buy last month.

Most women's supplement cabinets are a graveyard of good intentions and zero diagnostics. Chinese medicine reads your pattern. Functional medicine confirms it in labs. Then we build a protocol, not a guess.

Stop supplementing blind.

I'm 53. Twenty years in clinic. I've watched more women blindsided by perimenopause than anything else in my practice. Including myself!!

Not because it's rare. Because nobody explained what was actually happening: hormones, yes, but also a nervous system running on overdrive and a society that doesn’t support this transition.

This is why I practice the way I do. Chinese medicine reads the pattern. Functional medicine confirms it in the labs. Together they explain what one alone can't.

Follow along if you're heading into midlife and nobody's told you what's coming yet.

Laptop open, couch, 3pm.

Mabel and Hopper are usually cuddling, but they must have heard something outside…

I’ve had a rough stretch of sleep this week. Life's been throwing some curveballs lately, that have kept me awake most nights.

My old move used to be a nap. These days it’s yoga nidra instead.

Here's the difference. A nap can leave you groggier than when you started. Yoga nidra skips that problem. You stay in a conscious, deeply relaxed state the whole time, so your nervous system gets the reset without the sleep-cycle hangover.

For anyone in perimenopause or menopause, this matters even more. Your sleep architecture is already changing. Adding a half-finished nap on top of that can make things worse, not better.

20 minutes of yoga nidra did more for me today than an hour of trying to force a nap ever has.

If life's been interrupting your rest and you keep reaching for caffeine instead, this is your sign to try something different.

Comment NIDRA if you want the yoga nidra I used today!

Tonight was one of those evenings that reminded me just how important community is.

We had such a great group of women together at Great Frogs. Lots of conversation, lots of laughing, and that easy feeling that happens when women can just be themselves.

And it got me thinking about how much we talk about the things that affect our health: sleep, hormones, nutrition, movement, stress. But one of the things we sometimes overlook is **community.**

Having women you can laugh with. Women who understand what you’re going through. Women you can call, meet for dinner, or sit around a table with and talk about absolutely everything.

That matters.

And I’m really feeling that right now.

I started Our Next Chapter because I wanted to create more of that for women in this stage of life. I didn’t know what it would become when I started it, but watching the connections and friendships happening within this group has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.

Tonight, Gwynn brought me flowers from her garden because she was grateful for this community. 🌸

And frankly, so am I.

So here’s your little nudge: text the friend you’ve been meaning to call. Make the dinner plans. Say yes to the invitation. Find your people.

Your health isn’t just about what you do alone.

Sometimes, it’s about who you’re doing life with. ❤️

If you’re craving more community in this season of life, tell me in the comments: what are you looking for more of right now? Friendship? Fun? Support? Connection? Adventure?

My absolute favorite day of the year. Well, any day I can spend quality time with my dogs 🙂 I’m a little obsessed. This empty nesting collection is getting out of hand!

Snapped this while I waited for one of my good girlfriends to get off the train.

She came into town to photograph my team, and ended up staying the night. We talked until way too late, the kind where the conversation just picks back up like no time passed at all.

This morning we squeezed in a little more time together before I dropped her back at the station.

There’s a specific kind of connection that happens between women in midlife. We’ve lived enough life to know exactly what matters. We’ve let go of the friendships that took more than they gave. What’s left is real: women who show up, who ask the good questions, who remember the small things you told them months ago.

I needed this visit more than I realized.

If you have a friend like this, the one where even if time goes by, as soon as you see each other it’s like a big exhale, don’t wait. Get the next visit on the calendar. Or at least tag her here. Nicole A. Wetzel
