Meet Flora: Where Every Bloom Begins

Every garden keeps an old story. Some are carried in petals, some in pigment, and some in the names we have whispered for centuries.

Our Almanac begins with Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, spring, and blossoming life. She represents nature at that luminous threshold when a bud opens, a seed keeps its promise, and the earth begins to flourish.

In Ovid’s Fasti, Flora recalls that she was once Chloris, a Greek flower nymph, and that Zephyrus—the gentle west wind—gave her dominion over flowers. This is a poetic Greco-Roman blending of their stories, rather than evidence that Flora and Chloris were originally the same figure.

Throughout September, we will open a new page each Wednesday—exploring Flora through mythology, art, color, festival traditions, and the living meaning behind Botanic Flora Apothecary.

Where Botanic Flora Began

Every name carries a story. Botanic Flora begins with two ancient words—one rooted in the wisdom of plants and the other in the spirit of everything that blooms.

Botanic comes from the Greek botanē, referring to herbs, plants, pasture, and that which nourishes. It represents the knowledge, usefulness, and generous gifts of the plant world.

Flora was the Roman goddess of flowers, spring, blossoming, and abundance. Her Greek counterpart was Chloris, a flower nymph associated with fresh growth. The word flora later came to mean all the plant life belonging to a particular place.

Throughout art history, Flora has appeared crowned with flowers, scattering blossoms, or surrounded by the colors of spring. Artists such as Botticelli and Rembrandt transformed her story through palettes ranging from luminous florals to warm, earthy golds.

The Botanic Flora Almanac will gather the hidden stories held within flowers, pigments, fragrance, folklore, art, and old apothecary traditions—revealing how nature has shaped the ways we create, celebrate, remember, and find meaning.

Botanic is the wisdom of the plant. Flora is the spirit within the bloom. Together, they tell the story of Botanic Flora Apothecary—where the nourishment of the earth becomes a life that flourishes.
