Leadership in action! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
MdPHA President-Elect Doreen Effange recently joined fellow public health leaders from across the country for the APHA President-Elect Leadership Boot Camp, an opportunity to strengthen leadership skills, exchange ideas, and build connections across APHA Affiliates.
Reflecting on the experience, Doreen shared:
“One of my biggest takeaways from the APHA President-Elect Leadership Boot Camp is that effective public health leadership requires strong governance, strategic advocacy, and meaningful partnerships. Equally valuable was connecting with Affiliate leaders across the country, reinforcing that collaboration is key to advancing public health and strengthening our communities.”
We’re excited to see Doreen bring these insights, connections, and continued commitment to collaborative leadership back to MdPHA as we work to strengthen public health across Maryland.

On August 7, MdPHA President Nellie Washington joined Deanna Neal on WEAA 88.9 FM at Morgan State University for an important conversation about public health leadership, health equity, and the power of community-centered work across Maryland. 🎙️💙🧡
During the conversation, Nellie shared more about her work with Maryland’s Health Equity Resource Communities (HERC) initiative and her leadership with the Maryland Public Health Association (MdPHA). Both efforts reflect a shared commitment to strengthening communities, addressing health disparities, and ensuring Marylanders have access to the resources and systems they need to thrive.
We’re proud to see MdPHA leadership helping connect public health practice, community voices, and Maryland’s broader health equity agenda.

“As a medical resident who sits with patients to gather their histories of present illness early in the visit, I have a unique vantage point from which to witness how social determinants of health shape the well-being of patients and communities far beyond the hospital walls. Public health matters to me because it helps foster healthier environments, reduce health disparities, and promote equitable opportunities for all individuals to achieve optimal health. I am committed to leveraging this perspective to advocate for my patients and to partner with communities in addressing the structural and social conditions that ultimately shape their health outcomes.”
