I learned something this morning that I haven't been able to stop thinking about.

Have you ever wondered why so many black families give their children unique, one of a kind names? I always noticed it but never knew the history behind it.

It goes back to slavery. Enslaved parents would give their children distinctive names on purpose, so that if their child was sold or taken to another plantation, they could go from person to person and ask "have you seen my child?" by name. A common name like John or Mary — they'd never find them. But a name nobody else had? That was a lifeline. That was a way to hold on.

That's not just a naming tradition. That's love and survival woven together into one word.

Today we celebrate freedom. But we also honor everything it cost to get here. 🖤

When Ryan and I started making elderberry syrup and fire cider back in 2018, we honestly just wanted to keep our family healthy. We had no idea it would turn into something that would help keep us afloat too — through some really hard seasons.

You guys. I have to share this. 🥹❤️

Ryan has been gluten and grain-free for years — and if you've ever tried to find good gluten-free bread, you know that almost ALL of it is made with rice flour. Which means most "gluten-free" options weren't even an option for him.

He has not had a sandwich in over 10 years. 🥪

We found this bread at Sprouts — it's called The Grain Escape — and it is gluten-free AND grain-free. No rice flour. And you guys... it actually tastes like bread. REAL bread. 😭

Elderberry Lemonade is giving us ALL the summer feels right now 🍋💜

It's so simple and the kids absolutely love it:

🫙 2 tbsp A&R elderberry syrup
🍋 Juice of 1 lemon
💧 8 oz sparkling or still water
🍯 A little extra honey if you like it sweeter

Mix it up, pour over ice, and enjoy! It's a fun way to sneak in some immune support without it feeling like "medicine" at all 😄
