One of our patients left this in our inbox this morning and our hearts are so full right now. They said, "When I was researching mental health clinics in Denver for my husband, I did what everyone does - read reviews, checked credentials, called around. But here's what I learned: you can't really know until you walk in the door. At Axis Integrated Mental Health, the difference hit me immediately during that first visit. The front desk remembered our names. The intake coordinator actually listened instead of just checking boxes. Even before we met the psychiatrist, I felt like we'd made the right choice. That instinct was right - the clinical team has been exceptional, but it's the whole experience that makes Axis different from the three other practices we tried in Denver. If you're tired of shopping around and want a place where quality shows up in every interaction, this is what "best staff" actually means in practice."

Laziness is a short-term choice, usually driven by boredom or lack of interest.

Depression is a medical condition that drains your motivation, energy, and ability to think clearly, even when you want to act.

Key differences:
1. Desire to change: Laziness: Often doesn't care | Depression: Wants change but feels blocked

2. Motivational self-talk: Laziness: "I'll do it later"| Depression: "I hate that I can't start"

3. Emotional charge: Laziness: Guilt-free procrastination | Depression: Persistent guilt, shame, or worthlessness

4. Energy level: Laziness: Has energy but lacks motivation | Depression: Fatigue is overwhelming and unrelieved by rest

5. Response to rewards: Laziness: Perks up with incentives | Depression: Even exciting things feel dull

6. Impact scope: Laziness: Task-specific (e.g., avoids chores) | Depression: Broad impact across work, hygiene, socializing

Myths that obscure diagnosis:
1. "I just need more willpower"
2. "People with depression are always crying"
3. "If I can still work, I can't be depressed"
4. "If I can get out of bed, I'm fine"

Depression isn't a character flaw. It's a clinical signal. And you don't have to push through it alone.

The numbers should stop us in our tracks.

Only 42% of LGBTQ+ Coloradans report having good mental health. For transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse Coloradans, that drops to just 22.9%.

And for LGBTQ+ youth in Colorado, the crisis is even harder to ignore:

41% seriously considered su***de
47% of transgender and nonbinary youth considered su***de
12% attempted su***de in the past year
68% reported anxiety symptoms
56% reported depression symptoms
48% wanted mental health care but couldn’t get it

That last number should haunt us a little.

Because this isn’t about “awareness.” It’s about access. It’s about whether people can find care that is safe, affirming, respectful, and actually helpful.

At Axis, we believe LGBTQ+ mental health care should not require you to explain your identity before you can start healing. You deserve providers who listen, respect you, and take your pain seriously.

Pride is a celebration. It is also a responsibility.

This is a heavy, hidden number, but we have to talk about it: 282,000 adults in Colorado are experiencing serious suicidal thoughts. That’s more than the entire population of Aurora, our third-largest city.

This statistic ( #47) is a key driver of our overall adult mental health ranking ( #48). It’s the terrifying end-point of a system that is failing to support people before they reach this crisis.

We’re here to be that support. We’re here to be the "before." We offer innovative treatments like TMS and Spravato (covered by insurance) specifically for those who feel like nothing else has worked. This is for the people who feel "treatment-resistant." You're not. You just haven't found the right treatment yet.

You're the "strong one." The one who handles the crisis. The one who never breaks. You’re so good at holding it all together that no one can see you're shattering on the inside. But the shame, the anxiety, the sense of being "out of control" is becoming too much.

Kayla Sharpe is a provider who is not afraid of your mess.

With a background in high-acuity crisis units, Kayla has seen it all. She is an expert in helping people navigate the scariest, most complex conditions such as Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders (especially in children), and deep-seated trauma.

Her superpower is creating a true, judgment-free zone. She is here to "hold space", to give you a safe harbor where you can finally put down the armor, fall apart, and let her help you rebuild safely. Her entire practice is built on helping you heal without shame.

You don’t have to be the strong one anymore. It’s your turn to be held.

21 million adults in the U.S. experience Major Depressive Disorder every year. 14.5 million experience severe impairment.
MDD isn't just sadness, it's a medical condition that requires comprehensive treatment.

First-line treatments (SSRIs, therapy): 30-40% response rate
Advanced treatments (TMS, Spravato): 80%+ response rate in treatment-resistant cases

But here's what matters: integrated care works better than fragmented care. When psychiatry, therapy, and advanced treatments are coordinated under one roof, outcomes improve.

MDD is treatable. Recovery is possible. Comment FREECONSULT and we'll send you a link to check your coverage for advanced treatment options -- free, no obligation.

Okay, patients sharing their stories warms our hearts. But, our partners sharing stories? That's something else!

"As a community mental health provider myself, I refer patients to Axis Integrated Mental Health consistently - and specifically to Dare. When you work in this field, you know which providers are genuinely exceptional versus just adequate. Dare goes above and beyond to ensure patients receive the highest quality psychiatric care, stays current with evidence-based practices, and approaches each case with the clinical rigor and personal investment that this work requires. The fact that Axis has built a reputation as Denver's premier integrated mental health practice isn't accidental - it's because their clinical team maintains standards that many practices claim but don't deliver. If you're researching psychiatrists in Denver and want to know who other mental health professionals trust with their own patients, Axis consistently delivers the level of care that earns professional respect and patient loyalty."

Su***de is the #1 cause of death for 10-14 year olds in Colorado.

While we are celebrating a much-needed overall improvement in youth mental health this year (jumping to 31st from 44th), this data point shows us exactly where the fight is. The fact that 47 of our 64 counties lack a single practicing child psychiatrist is a structural gap we can no longer ignore. We are leaving our rural and mountain communities to fend for themselves.

We are in a crisis of access for our most vulnerable. At Axis, we are committed to closing this gap. Our telehealth services are designed to reach families across the state, and our teams are built to support children and adolescents. Your child does not have to be a statistic.
