🩺 What does physician-led really mean?

It means the people making decisions for our group understand what it's like to be in your shoes... because they're still wearing the same scrubs. Your career in Emergency Medicine will not be a “destination”, rather a “journey”. You will face challenges and trials along the way – VEA offers colleagues with integrity and the morals that led you to pursue a career in medicine – these are the colleagues who will be in the “foxholes” with you!

At VEA Health, we're proudly physician-owned and physician-led. Our leaders don't just manage emergency medicine - they practice it.

Our President, Dr. Bryan Dunn, is also the current President of the Texas College of Emergency Physicians (TCEP) and continues to care for patients in rural emergency departments, including Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville.

That perspective matters.

It means decisions are grounded in the realities of patient care, informed by clinicians who are still at the bedside, and focused on building a practice where physicians and APPs can thrive.

We also believe in developing leaders from within, giving our clinicians opportunities to grow into Medical Director and leadership roles across our organization.

Because when the people leading the group are living the work every day, everyone benefits—our clinicians, our hospital partners, and most importantly, our patients.

VEA Health was proud to sponsor UTHealth Houston’s Emergency Medicine Residency Journal Club last night in Houston!

Our President, Dr. Bryan Dunn, returned to where his own journey began—having attended medical school at UTHealth Houston—to spend time with the next generation of emergency medicine physicians.

Dr. Dunn shared his experiences in medicine, his passion for rural healthcare, and what a future with a physician-owned, clinician-led organization like VEA Health can look like.

A huge thank you to the UTHealth Houston Emergency Medicine Residency Program for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to connect with your residents. We’re grateful to support the important work you’re doing to educate and develop tomorrow’s emergency medicine physicians.

🌾 Rural Emergency Departments Are the Heart of Their Communities

In many Texas towns, the local emergency department is more than a place to receive care—it's a trusted part of the community.

It's where neighbors care for neighbors, families find support close to home, and dedicated clinicians are there when they're needed most.

At VEA Health, we're proud to partner with rural hospitals and the incredible physicians, APPs, nurses, and hospital teams who serve these communities every day.

Because every community—no matter its size—deserves compassionate, high-quality emergency care close to home.

What a fantastic weekend at the CBA Championship BBQ Cook-Off in Poteet! 🔥

Team VEA had an incredible time spending the weekend with colleagues, friends, and fellow BBQ enthusiasts at one of Texas' premier cook-off events! From great food to even better company, it was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the community and represent VEA Health outside the hospital.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our cook site to visit, share a meal, and spend time with us. We appreciate the hard work of the CBA organizers and all of the teams that made this year's championship another memorable event.

Until next year, Poteet!

Clinician Spotlight: Bettye Reed, APP

This month, we're proud to shine the spotlight on Bettye Reed, FNP-C, ENP-C!
Bettye joined VEA Health in 2023, returning to Uvalde Memorial Hospital as a Nurse Practitioner after beginning her healthcare career there as a Registered Nurse in 2016. A graduate of Southwest Texas Junior College and The University of Texas at Arlington, she has deep roots in the Texas Hill Country and is passionate about caring for the community she calls home.

Today, Bettye provides emergency care in both Uvalde and San Antonio, embracing the opportunity to serve patients in both rural and urban settings. She says what she appreciates most about VEA Health is the ability to continue caring for her hometown while growing professionally.

When she's not in the emergency department, Bettye enjoys spending time with her 12-year-old son, Joshua, tubing and kayaking the Frio River with family, and caring for her three dogs—a golden doodle and two rescue pups.

Thank you, Bettye, for your compassion, dedication, and commitment to your patients, colleagues, and the communities we serve. We're grateful to have you as part of the VEA Health family!
