Industry + alumni + BME = a pretty great Friday 🤘

Last Friday, we hosted our first-ever BME Industry Open House alongside our annual Fall Gathering!

Students got to connect with teams from Enovis, Natera, Abbott Electrophysiology, Abbott Cardiac Rhythm Management and MD Anderson Cancer Center about careers, research and clinical opportunities in biomedical engineering.

And the best part? Several of the industry representatives were BME alumni!

It was a chance to connect across generations of Longhorn engineers, celebrate our BME community, grab a popsicle and grab a student-designed BME T-shirt. Thanks for everyone who attended! 🧡

Big news for Texas BME! 🤘

Congratulations to our very own department Chair and Professor Tyrone Porter on being elected a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES).

This prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Porter’s sustained leadership, innovation and impact in biomedical engineering.

His research uses biomedical acoustic technologies, including photoacoustic imaging and high-intensity focused ultrasound, to advance medical imaging and drug delivery, including work to safely and temporarily open the blood-brain barrier.

Beyond the lab, Dr. Porter champions broader representation in biomedical engineering and advances the field’s impact on medicine.

Congratulations, Dr. Porter! We’re proud to have you leading Texas BME!

What does it look like to train engineers to tackle real healthcare challenges before they graduate?

At the University of Texas at Austin, biomedical engineering students are already doing it 🤘

In Texas, 28% of counties don’t have a hospital. That means many communities face real barriers to getting timely diagnostic testing and care. In a course led by Dr. Nuttada Panpradist, students are rethinking how diagnostics are designed, built, and delivered, with a focus on point-of-care solutions for rural and global settings.

The course wraps with a poster symposium where students present their ideas and prototypes to faculty, peers, and collaborators across campus. The projects focus on infectious diseases that directly impact Texas communities and beyond.

These engineers are developing practical, human-centered solutions that could bring testing closer to patients, reduce care delays, and improve outcomes in underserved areas. Hook ‘em! 🤘

Save the Date! 🤘

40 for Forty, The University of Texas at Austin’s annual university-wide day of giving, is coming up April 29–30.

At Texas BME, we know that undergraduate independent research opens doors long after graduation. This year, we’re calling on our community of alumni, friends and partners to help sustain the next generation of biomedical engineers.

Your support funds students with bold ideas—providing the materials, tools, professional development and conference travel they need to test concepts, analyze data, and bring their innovations to life over the course of an academic year.

Stay tuned for more details on how you can make an impact.
