As Texas reviews key parts of its health and human services system, the next question is: how well are the structures connecting policy, financing, delivery, and local implementation equipped for the challenges ahead?

Our board gathered for two days of purposeful conversation about THI’s next chapter and the future of public health in Texas. The retreat created space to reflect, think strategically, and consider how THI can continue bringing people, ideas, and evidence together to strengthen the systems that shape health.

We also marked an important transition for our board, recognizing Sandy Tovar, DNP, APRN, PPCNP-BC, AE-C, for her dedicated service as past chair and welcoming Tonya Fuqua, DDS, as she presided over her first meeting as our new chair.

We were honored to welcome David Lakey, MD, Vice Chancellor of the UT Health System, for a rich conversation about the future of health in Texas.

We’re grateful for a board deeply committed to advancing the health of all and excited for what’s ahead.

Preventive dental care significantly impacts public health by reducing chronic disease risk, improving overall quality of life, and lowering healthcare costs.

57.7% of Texas adults report having been to a dentist or dental clinic in the past year.

Communities can increase the likelihood of adults receiving preventive dental care by increasing rates of dental insurance coverage, raising awareness of the importance of preventive dental care, and exploring innovative models like school- or workplace-based programs.

Our team came together this week for our 2026 Staff Retreat: Reflecting, Reimagining, and Shaping Our Next Chapter. Through two days of collaboration, we looked back on how far we've come, explored the trends shaping the future of health and public health, and began imagining what's to come for THI. We are returning more aligned and energized about our mission to advance the health of all!

Texas entered 2026 with a record 4.17 million Health Insurance Marketplace plan selections, but by February, only approximately 3.28 million Texans had active coverage, giving Texas one of the largest gaps between plan selection and active coverage among states with comparable CMS data.

Across the continuum from preconception through pregnancy and the postpartum period, there are multiple opportunities for care teams to identify risks, reinforce prevention, and coordinate care that supports both maternal and infant health.

Oral Health and the Perinatal Journey explores how oral health intersects with maternal and behavioral health, and how care teams across primary care, obstetrics, dental care, and community-based services can work together to deliver more connected, whole-person care.
