Every week there seems to be a new “miracle” compound for your health.
A new peptide.
A new supplement.
A new molecule we supposedly cannot live without.
But sometimes, instead of constantly looking for something new, it is worth taking another look at the good old classics.
Like vitamin C.
We have known about vitamin C for generations. But science continues to uncover roles that go far beyond the reasons most people associate with it.
One particularly interesting area is the gut-brain connection.
We now understand that the gut microbiome and the brain are in constant communication. Changes in this complex bacterial environment may influence inflammation, brain function, and mental and emotional health.
And this is where vitamin C becomes surprisingly interesting.
A recent randomized, placebo-controlled study looked at young adults who had suboptimal vitamin C levels.
After four weeks of vitamin C supplementation, researchers found measurable changes in their gut microbiome.
But it didn't stop there.
The microbiome changes were associated with:
🧠 Better performance on a test of selective attention
🧠 Changes associated with greater mental vitality
🧠 Increased BDNF in certain responders—a protein involved in brain function and neuroplasticity
🧠 Changes involving L-DOPA, a precursor used by the body to make dopamine
🔥 Reduced inflammatory responses
In other words, researchers weren't simply looking at vitamin C as an antioxidant.
They were investigating a much more fascinating pathway:
Vitamin C → Gut Microbiome → Immune System → Brain
This does NOT mean vitamin C is a treatment for anxiety, depression, or brain fog.
But it does reinforce something I emphasize constantly in my practice:
The brain should never be evaluated in isolation from the rest of the body.
When someone comes to us with anxiety, insomnia, low mood, or brain fog, I want to understand much more than the symptom.
What is happening with the nervous system?
The gut?
Inflammation?
Hormones?
Nutritional status?
Brain chemistry?
These systems communicate with one another constantly.
And sometimes something as familiar as vitamin C may have effects through pathways we barely considered a generation ago.
There is another interesting lesson here.
Going back to basics doesn't mean ignoring advances in science.
Quite the opposite.
Today we can measure nutritional status more precisely, better understand individual physiology, and use newer formulations designed to improve delivery and absorption when appropriate.
That's the combination I find most exciting:
Old wisdom. New science. Individual measurement.
Sometimes the next breakthrough isn't another exotic compound.
Sometimes it is discovering something completely new about something we thought we already understood.
We never guess. We measure.
