The fear of being seen as “aggressive” or “too masculine” is something that has weighed heavy on my heart throughout much of my life.

I remember my former partner, after seeing me put on a sports bra for the 4th day in a row, say that he “just wished I could be more feminine.”

What many men fail to realize is this: access to a woman’s softness is a privilege, not a right. For generations, women have been (and in many cases still are) massacred and abused for simply existing…then people wonder why we’re not more gentle creatures in today’s world.

The adults in my adolescence rarely created environments that felt safe enough for me to be soft and gentle. And unfortunately, that former partner not only didn’t grasp that, but he also didn’t create those conditions for me either.

Women are perceived as aggressive or masculine for many reasons. Oftentimes, we’re simply trying to survive the circumstances we’ve been given.

Before you comment on another woman’s sense of femininity, take a moment and reflect on why she might show up this way in the first place. Turns out curiosity is a superpower.
