If the skin between your thighs or your bikini area is getting darker and you cannot figure out why, I want you to check something most people never think about: what your underwear is made of.
Here is the science, and it is simpler than you would guess. We are all human. Women perspire, we have natural bodily fluids, men perspire too, this is normal and healthy. Now, when you wear synthetic underwear, nylon, spandex, lycra, materials that are essentially petroleum byproducts, you trap all of that moisture against skin that already has very little air circulation.
And that creates the perfect home for bacteria, because bacteria needs three things to thrive. It needs darkness, and it is dark between your legs. It needs warmth, and that area is warm. It needs humidity, and with trapped moisture it is humid by nature. Darkness, warmth, and humidity together are exactly the environment bacteria loves, and as that bacteria grows, it can drive more discoloration into the skin.
So the darkening you are blaming on friction, or weight, or just "how my skin is" may actually be feeding on the fabric you put on every single morning. The fix costs almost nothing: switch to cotton. Cotton underwear, cotton bikini bottoms, cotton shorts, breathable fabric that lets the skin actually get air and stay dry.
Now, I will be honest with you about the full picture. Cotton stops feeding the problem, but if discoloration is already there, it will not simply disappear on its own, and it certainly will not fade while you stay in synthetic fabric. You often need both, the cotton to stop it getting worse and proper treatment to fade what is already there.
If your inner thighs or bikini area have darkened, come see me and let's treat the cause and the color together.
