Every now and then, someone walks into a Drum Build and it feels like your paths were meant to cross.
Last weekend I had the privilege of helping someone create a beautiful Tree of Life drum. As we stretched the hide and brought her drum to life, our conversation unfolded naturally. We discovered so many unexpected things we had in common, sharing stories, experiences, and the journeys that have shaped us.
One thing that connected us deeply was our shared experience of living with physical and mental health challenges. We both know what it’s like to feel unheard, dismissed, or left searching for answers when Western medicine doesn’t always see the whole person or know how to help. Finding someone who truly sees you, believes you, and understands what you’ve walked through is a rare gift. It’s something I honestly never thought I’d find.
At one point she told me that she liked my vibe because I was authentic and wasn’t trying to be someone I wasn’t. Those words touched my heart. I believe the most meaningful connections happen when we simply show up as ourselves.
What I admired most about her was her creativity and her willingness to pursue the things that truly resonate with her. There’s something inspiring about someone who listens to their heart and has the courage to follow it.
Moments like these remind me that making a drum is about so much more than creating an instrument. It’s about connection. It’s about being witnessed. It’s about holding space for one another. And sometimes, without even realizing it, we help each other heal.
I’m deeply grateful for every person who chooses to sit around my drum-making table. You never know when you’re not just creating a drum—you might also find someone who reminds you that you’re not alone. ❤️🥁
