We’ve gotten so specialized in healthcare that sometimes we forget one very basic thing:

Your body is connected.

Your gut doesn’t operate independently from your hormones.
Your hormones don’t operate independently from inflammation.
Your metabolism, brain, skin, hair, immune system and energy don’t live in separate little boxes.

I always say it takes your right hand AND your left hand to make a clap.

So when someone comes to me asking about peptides, hormones, weight loss, hair loss or feeling exhausted, I’m still looking at the person attached to the symptom.

Because optimizing one piece while ignoring everything influencing it doesn’t make much sense to me.

That’s the functional medicine lens.

Stop chasing individual symptoms. Start asking what connects them.

September is PCOS Awareness Month, and this is a population that is very near and dear to my heart.

So many women — and young girls — are told their symptoms are “just hormones,” “just their period,” or that birth control is the answer.

But PCOS, now also being referred to as PMOS, can look very different from one person to another.

You do not have to have cysts on your ovaries.

It may show up as irregular periods, acne, mood changes, unwanted facial or body hair, difficulty losing weight, insulin resistance, or trouble ovulating.

And sometimes the symptoms are there long before anyone puts the pieces together.

Birth control may help manage some symptoms, but it does not always address what is actually driving them.

If this sounds like you, your daughter, or someone you love, I would be happy to help look a little deeper.

Schedule a consultation and let’s figure out what may really be going on. 💗

So… what are all these peptides everyone is talking about?

Yesterday I talked about GLP-1s being peptides.

But GLP-1s are only one category.

There are many different peptides being discussed right now, and they do very different things.

Some you may be hearing about:

GHK-Cu — skin, collagen and hair/scalp support
BPC-157 + TB-500 — tissue repair and recovery
KPV — being studied for inflammation and gut/skin support
Semax + Selank — being studied for focus, stress and cognitive support
Tesamorelin / Ipamorelin — growth-hormone signaling, recovery and body composition
GLP-1s — appetite, food noise, blood sugar and weight management

And that’s exactly why I don’t love the question:

“What peptide should I take?”

That’s like asking:

“What medication should I take?”

For what?

Your goals, health history, labs and symptoms matter.

Some peptides have established medical uses. Others are still being studied and are used very differently depending on the setting.

Peptides are fascinating. But they’re not one-size-fits-all — and they’re definitely not all the same.

Did you know GLP-1s are peptides?

Most people hear the word peptide and immediately think of something completely separate from medications like semaglutide or tirzepatide.

But GLP-1 medications are actually part of the peptide conversation.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as messengers in the body, helping different cells and systems communicate.

And GLP-1s are just one example.

There are many different peptides being studied and used in medicine, each with very different functions.

So should we be scared of the word “peptide”? No. We should understand what it means, what a specific peptide does, and whether it’s appropriate for the individual person.

Education first. That’s how we make better health decisions.

I keep seeing people say:

“I’m on a GLP-1 and I’m not losing weight.”

Or…

“It worked at first, and now nothing.”

Before assuming you need a higher dose, a different medication, or the cheapest version you can find, there may be another question to ask:

Why is your body holding onto the weight?

A GLP-1 can help decrease appetite and help you eat less.

But it can’t automatically fix everything else going on.

If you’re not losing weight, I would want to look at things like:

• Are your hormones changing?
• Is your thyroid working the way it should?
• Is your insulin still too high?
• Are you losing muscle because you’re not eating enough protein?
• Are you sleeping poorly?
• Are you under constant stress?
• Are you eating too little and barely getting enough nutrition?
• Are there medications or other health issues making weight loss harder?

Sometimes the answer isn’t more GLP-1.

And it definitely isn’t always find the cheapest GLP-1.

The goal should be to figure out what your body needs so the medication actually has a chance to work.

If you’ve been taking one and wondering why the scale isn’t moving, there may be more to the story.

One of the things I wish more people knew:

Your blood sugar can look “fine” while your body is already working way too hard to keep it there.

That’s where insulin comes in.

You may notice:

Weight showing up around your middle.
You’re hungry again shortly after eating.
You hit a wall in the afternoon.
Your cholesterol or triglycerides start creeping up.
Losing weight suddenly feels much harder.

And yet your glucose may still be in range.

Glucose is only one piece of the picture.

It’s important to know how much insulin your body is producing to keep that glucose looking normal.

That can tell us a lot.

We shouldn’t have to wait until something becomes a diagnosis to start paying attention.

A fasting insulin level is not always included in routine labs, especially if you don’t have diabetes. Glucose and A1C may be checked, but fasting insulin can sometimes show changes much earlier.

If you’ve been dealing with weight gain, cravings, fatigue, or changes in your cholesterol, it may be worth looking at the whole picture — before you’re ever given a diagnosis.

If you want to know what your fasting insulin looks like and what it may mean for your health, schedule an appointment and let’s look at it together.

We're living in a completely different world when it comes to weight loss.

GLP-1s have changed the game.

And I think that's a GOOD thing.

But here's the question:

Are we getting better at weight loss—or better at getting the number on the scale down?

Because those aren't necessarily the same thing.

If someone loses 40 pounds, I want the celebration!

But I also want to know:

What happened to the muscle?
Are they getting enough nutrition?
Are they actually healthier?

We have incredible tools now.

Why would we use just one?

Medication. Nutrition. Supplements when needed. Hormones when appropriate. Movement. Monitoring.

It's not either/or.

It's about using the right tools for the right person.

Because the goal isn't to create smaller people.

It's to create healthier people!

When did “I just don’t feel like myself anymore” become something we’re supposed to accept as part of getting older?

Weight starts creeping up.
Energy changes.
Sleep isn’t the same.
Libido disappears.
Muscle gets harder to maintain.
Your joints hurt.
You can’t concentrate the way you used to.

And then you’re told, “Your labs look normal.”

But normal doesn’t always explain why you don’t feel well.

This is the part of healthcare I love.

I want to know what changed.

Hormones? Insulin? Thyroid? Nutrient deficiencies? Sleep? Muscle loss? Inflammation? Stress? Something we’re simply not looking for?

Getting older is inevitable.

Feeling terrible is not something I automatically write off as aging.

If you’ve been feeling like something has changed — your weight, energy, sleep, focus, libido, strength, or just the way you feel in your own body — it may be time to look deeper instead of simply accepting it as aging.

The goal isn’t to chase one symptom. It’s to understand what may be contributing and fix what needs to be fixed first.

Sometimes you don’t need another quick fix.

You need someone to connect the dots.

What changed first for you: your energy, weight, sleep, libido, or something else?

Getting older does not automatically mean you have to accept:

• Constant fatigue
• Weight that suddenly won’t move
• Poor sleep
• Brain fog
• Joint pain
• Loss of strength
• Hormonal changes that make you feel unlike yourself

Some changes are part of aging.

But sometimes we blame age for things that deserve a closer look.

The goal isn’t to chase “anti-aging.”

It’s to stay strong, mobile, clear-headed, independent and feeling like yourself for as long as possible.

That may mean looking at hormones, nutrient deficiencies, insulin resistance, inflammation, thyroid function, sleep, muscle loss, pain — and sometimes regenerative options when appropriate.

You don’t have to wait until something is seriously wrong to start working on your health.

If you feel like your body has changed and you’re tired of being told, “Well, you’re getting older,” book an appointment.

Let’s figure out what is actually going on.

The kids are back in school.

Now… what about YOU?

You spent the summer making sure everyone else had what they needed.

But maybe somewhere along the way, you got pushed to the bottom of the list.

You’re tired.
Your hormones feel off.
The weight isn’t moving — especially around your middle.
You’re not sleeping well.
You’re stressed.
And honestly… you just don’t feel like yourself.

Now that the backpacks are packed and the kids are back in their routines, maybe it’s time to put YOU back on the calendar.

Not another quick fix.
Not “eat less and exercise more.”
Not being told everything looks normal when you know you don’t feel normal.

Let’s figure out what’s actually going on — hormones, thyroid, metabolism, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies and more — and create a plan that makes sense for YOU.

This school year, don’t forget to take care of the person who takes care of everyone else. ❤️
