Debussy's Étude "pour les cinq doigts" begins with one of the most familiar exercises in piano playing, but what starts as a simple technical pattern quickly becomes something imaginative, playful, and unmistakably Debussy. It's also widely believed to be a tongue in cheek nod to Carl Czerny, whose exercise books have been a rite of passage for piano students for generations.
