Africa’s regulatory landscape is moving quickly.
At PharmaReg AfriSummit 2026, our team joined regulators, manufacturers and technology partners to discuss the progress being made across the continent, from greater regulatory harmonisation and reliance to stronger national authorities and the growing use of digital systems.
We came away encouraged by how much of the conversation has shifted towards implementation: how these developments can make regulatory processes more efficient, reduce unnecessary duplication and ultimately help quality-assured medicines reach patients faster.
But there is another question we think deserves just as much attention: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹?
Approval can open a market, but there are still significant barriers between an approved product and the patient who needs it.
This is why conversations about regulation, procurement, financing, logistics and technology increasingly need to connect.
At Axmed, we see the opportunity to bring more of that information together, connecting demand with quality supply, increasing visibility through procurement and carrying regulatory requirements into the transaction and delivery process.
Dr. Onyango Michael explores this question in more depth in his latest thought leadership article, reflecting on what he heard at AfriSummit and why the next phase of regulatory progress must consider the full journey medicines take after approval.
