“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.”
-Thich Nhat Hahn
Every exhale is a release. Every inhale is a beginning.
A Breath Practice
The roots of a breath practice go back thousands of years and draw directly from the ancient yogic practice of breath control. The mechanics are simple: inhale quietly through the nose for a count of two, hold, exhale completely to the count of four. The extended exhale is the key. When we exhale longer than we inhale, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system–the body’s rest and digest state, the counterweight to the fight-or-flight response most of us are living in far more than we realize. When we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, our heart rate slows and our muscles relax. Our minds, which have been running their usual urgent commentary, quiet enough to let something else be heard.
Try this and let me know how it goes!
