🍼💛 Pacifiers can be a wonderful source of comfort for little ones, but as children grow, parents often wonder: When is the right time to say goodbye?

While pacifier use is common during infancy, prolonged habits can sometimes influence how teeth and jaws develop.
The AAPD encourages discontinuing nonnutritive sucking habits by 36 months, ideally beginning weaning earlier.

The good news? Helping your child move away from the pacifier doesn't have to happen overnight.

Bad breath after waking up happens. But what if it keeps coming back? 🦷💛

In children, persistent bad breath can have several possible causes. Food particles and plaque left behind by inconsistent brushing and flossing are common contributors, and bacteria can also collect on the tongue.

Hydration matters too. Water supports saliva production and helps rinse away particles that can contribute to odor.

Sometimes persistent bad breath may be connected to concerns outside the teeth, such as sinus or throat conditions or reflux. If good oral hygiene doesn’t seem to help, it’s worth bringing up with your child’s dentist or pediatrician.

Fresh breath starts with healthy daily habits, and we’re here to help families figure out what may be going on when something doesn’t seem quite right. 💛

🕵️‍♀️🦷 Calling All Smile Detectives!

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, and this year, instead of simply reminding kids to “brush your teeth,” try helping them discover why those healthy habits matter.

Turn brushing time into a Smile Detective Challenge 🔎

👅 Investigate after snack time. Which foods seem to stick around on their teeth?

🦷 Explore their smile. Can they find the different shapes of their teeth or count how many they have?

⏱️ Test the two-minute rule. Have them guess when two minutes have passed, then compare it with a timer!

🔍 Find the hiding spots. Where might food and plaque get missed? Behind the front teeth? Along the gumline? Around those back molars?

The goal isn’t perfect brushing. It’s helping children become curious about their own oral health and understand why taking care of their teeth matters.

When kids become active participants in caring for their smiles, everyday routines can gradually turn into lifelong healthy habits. 💛

What if some cavities could be treated without drilling or numbing? 🦷💛

Silver Diamine Fluoride, or SDF, is a liquid medication that can be brushed directly onto certain areas of tooth decay to help stop the cavity from progressing. It can be especially useful for very young children, anxious patients, or kids who may not yet be ready for traditional restorative treatment.

The application is quick and typically doesn’t require removing tooth structure.. One important thing for parents to know: SDF permanently darkens the decayed portion of the tooth.

SDF isn’t the right choice for every cavity, so Dr. Dhali considers your child’s age, comfort level, and the extent of decay before recommending it.

A baby tooth that comes out early can leave more than just a cute gap. 🦷💛

Baby teeth help hold space for the permanent teeth developing underneath. When a primary tooth is lost too soon because of decay, injury, or another concern, nearby teeth may begin to shift into that open space.

In some cases, Dr. Dhali may recommend a custom space maintainer to help preserve the room an adult tooth needs to come in properly.

Not every early tooth loss requires one, which is why an exam matters. We look at your child’s age, dental development, and the location of the missing tooth before recommending next steps.
