Back-to-School Desk Posture Tips

As students get back into classroom routines, sitting posture can make a big difference in comfort, focus, and endurance throughout the school day.

Here are a few quick desk posture tips from your Morrill County Rehab team:

- Sit with feet flat on the floor or supported by a footrest.
- Keep knees and hips bent around 90 degrees.
- Sit back in the chair with the back supported.
- Keep shoulders relaxed—not hunched up by the ears.
- Place schoolwork or screens at eye level when possible to avoid looking down for long periods.
- Keep elbows close to the body and wrists in a comfortable, neutral position when writing or using a device.
- Take short movement breaks to stretch, stand, or reset posture.

Good posture helps support attention, hand use, breathing, and overall comfort—especially during long school days!

If your child struggles with sitting tolerance, handwriting, posture, core strength, or classroom participation, our PT, OT, and ST team is here to help.

Back-to-School Handwriting Tips

As students return to the classroom, handwriting is still an important skill for note-taking, worksheets, assignments, and building confidence with school routines.

Here are a few tips from your Morrill County Rehab team to support handwriting success:

- Make sure your child’s feet are supported and their paper is positioned comfortably.
- Encourage a relaxed pencil grip—avoid squeezing too tightly.
- Use the “helper hand” to hold the paper steady while writing.
- Keep wrists and shoulders relaxed.
- Practice short, consistent writing activities instead of long, frustrating sessions.
- Focus on letter formation, spacing, sizing, and staying on the line.
- Strengthen hands through play—try coloring, cutting, building with blocks, playdough, or using tongs.

Handwriting involves much more than just pencil and paper—it uses fine motor skills, visual skills, posture, coordination, strength, and attention.

If your child struggles with handwriting, hand strength, pencil grasp, spacing, letter formation, or completing written work, our PT, OT, and ST team is here to help.

Back-to-School Backpack Safety

As kids head back to school, backpacks quickly become part of the daily routine—but a backpack that is too heavy or worn incorrectly can lead to neck, shoulder, or back discomfort.
Here are a few quick tips from your Morrill County Rehab team:

-Keep the backpack light-aim for no more than about 10–15% of your child’s body weight.
-Use both shoulder straps to keep weight evenly distributed.
-Choose a backpack with wide, padded straps and a padded back.
-Pack heavier items closest to the body.
-Adjust straps so the backpack sits snugly between the shoulders and hips.
-Watch for warning signs like pain, tingling, red marks on the shoulders, or your child leaning forward while wearing it.

A few small adjustments can make a big difference in keeping kids comfortable, supported, and ready to learn!

Have concerns about posture, strength, coordination, or daily school routines? Our PT, OT, and ST team is here to help.
