Our Winooski Ramp Salt began with this spring’s Ramp Stewardship & Transplanting Workshop in Westford at the beginning of May! 🧅🧂

Together with elder Tatjana Cady, community members gathered to learn sustainable harvesting and transplanting practices while tending a thriving population of ramps, also known as winos or wild leek, a sacred spring plant that gave the Winooski River its name: “Onion Land” in Abenaki.

Using ramps gathered during the workshop, we created this seasonal salt as a way to extend the flavor, story, and spirit of the experience beyond the forest floor! It's available in our web boutique for local pick-up, to be enjoyed as a delish addition to your foods and a way of giving back to your community! 💚All profits from Winooski Sea Salt sales support Abenaki and native plant rematriation efforts, helping continue the work of restoration, stewardship, and reciprocal relationship with the lands and plants of the Winooski watershed.

The rain arrived right on time, as it often does for our first apprenticeship gathering of the season... 🌿💦 ...water blessings, we like to imagine!

A few weeks ago, we welcomed a new circle of apprentices to the Rooted Heart Rising garden to begin a season of learning, tending, and growing together while they embark on a 6-month journey, our Community Herbalism Apprenticeship Program.

Together, we wove the Maypole beneath gray skies and fresh spring rain, braiding ribbons into a living symbol of community, connection and seasonal renewal. Each year, we think of this tradition as a weaving-in...of new hands, new stories, new plant relationships becoming part of the wider community gathered around this work. 💚

Medicine Making and Mutual Aid Virtual 3D

Interested in making and sharing herbal medicine?

Join and Ayo .herbalist as we root ourselves in community care and cultural connection in our Medicine Making and Mutual Aid 3D, a virtual offering hosted by Soul Fire Farm.

In honoring our ancestral healing legacies and their connection to liberation, we’ll explore creative ways to make and share accessibly-sourced herbal medicines within our communities.

The 3D series is a multidimensional workshop series designed for B.I.P.O.C. (Black, Indigenous, &/or People of Color) to deepen skills in specific farming and land stewardship practices in a culturally relevant, supportive, and joyful environment.

In this 2-hour workshop, you can expect to:

* explore practical and creative ways to show up for your community and comrades with herbal remedies and information
*learn more about the embodiment of mutualism through an exploration of current and historical models of mutual aid
* collectively brainstorm ideas for herbal distribution and skill-sharing
* strategize around accessibility and sourcing herbal material in a sustainable way
* provide tools and recipes that can support you in practicing hands-on medicine-making skills

We’re excited to share that Spoonful Herbals’ Kara Buchanan will be joining this year’s Pollinator Celebration on June 6th at Shelburne Farms! 🌼🐝

Kara will be leading 'Herbal Honey Preparations: Shrubs & Oxymels' from 2:45–4 PM, exploring traditional herbal preparations that weave together pollinator plants, seasonal nourishment, and kitchen medicine. Participants will learn about herbal honeys, vinegar infusions, and oxymels while connecting more deeply to the plants and pollinators that make these remedies possible.

The day includes workshops, talks, native plant vendors, and opportunities to learn from organizations and educators working to support pollinators across the Northeast.

After a beautiful introductory gathering at the Intervale last week, we’re excited to officially begin the 2026 season of the Community Gleaning & Wildcrafting Guild on June 8th! 🌿

Join Spoonful Herbals’ Katherine Elmer and Broni Grala for a season of learning directly with the plants and landscape. You’ll explore plant identification, honorable harvest practices, seasonal medicine making, and ways of building long-term reciprocal relationships with the land.

Guild gatherings meet twice monthly on Monday evenings throughout the growing season, with resources shared online between gatherings to support continued learning and connection.

There is something deeply meaningful about gathering in the woods together to share plant knowledge, seasonal awareness, and simple herbal practices rooted in place 🌲

Recently, Spoonful Herbals co-founder Katherine Elmer and herbalist, Broni Grala collaborated with Shelburne Farms as part of their Forest for Every Classroom program, guiding educators through a sensory exploration of the spring landscape and crafting White Pine Infused Honey from freshly gathered needles.

Introducing our Winooski Sea Salt! 🌿
All profits support Abenaki and native plant rematriation efforts.

Made with fine sea salt and sustainably wildcrafted ramps, this seasonal blend honors the deep history of the Winooski River and the people who have cared for these lands for generations.

“Winooski” comes from an Abenaki word meaning “land of the onions” or “onion river.” Through this ongoing restoration and reparations collaborative project, we teach sustainable wildcrafting and propagation of wild leeks, ramps, and winos (Allium tricoccum), while inviting community members to replant along the banks of the Winooski and throughout Chittenden County.

Ramps were heavily overharvested by white settlers. This work is rooted in restoration, reciprocity, and the principles of the Honorable Harvest.

We’re excited to gather for Tending the Land with Fern Lickfield and Spoonful Herbals this Sunday at Rock Point Commons 🌿 ...and there is a few spots open for last minute registrations if you are feeling called to join us!

This day-long workshop invites participants into deeper relationship with the lands they inhabit through earth divining, ritual, reciprocity, and practices for tending the well being of place. Together, we’ll explore ways of listening, sensing, and responding to the living world with greater awareness and care. 💚

Participants will be introduced to earth connection practices including divining, offerings, earth acupuncture, and healing practices for the land, waters, air, and fire. ✨ Registration includes a set of divining rods to take home and continue practicing with.

Fern Lickfield brings decades of experience as a Druid priestess, geomancer, ceremonialist, community organizer, and earth healer. Her work is rooted in relationship, remembrance, and fostering meaningful connections with the land.
